Root Rooting, step by step?

Hey everyone!

This might seem lazy, but a lot of topics here don't seem really clear on this.. I'm wondering if someone could help me out personally. I have a Desire on 2.2 and I live in the Netherlands. It has an AMOLED screen, I've checked that on the box. Now I was wondering if anyone could help me linking to the proper step-by-step guide to help me get perhaps Cyanogen Mod 7 and Apps2SD on my phone. That and being able to use Wii controllers would be so awesome.

So what I do is run this, root the phone with it, then I will be able to put custom ROMS on?

What is a custom recovery image? Will the phone be backed-up to prevent bricking right away?
 
I did this last week and the video Lecter provides, was by far the best I've seen on it. Very easy to do with this video. Do not forget to backup before you flash a rom.
 
I have one more question, I see all this stuff about "radios" that have to be applied properly as well or it might brick the phone. Do I need to to that in any way or can I just follow your revoked guide and flash the Cyaonogen Mod?

You don't need to worry about radios.

Eddy, if I make a backup using the unrevoked method won't that be the current stock build? What does RUU mean?

When I have a backup after rooting made by the clockwork recovery thing, will that be able to save my phone in any situation that might occur?
I was also wondering if it is possible to come back clean completely after rooting?

2. Double click the Unrevoked program you downloaded. If using Windows, then click on the file that appears called Hboot Driver and follow it’s instructions to install the modified HBoot drivers OR click here and download the drivers and install them manually.

Um, when I download Unrevoked I just get one file called reflash_package. No Hboot drivers or anything? Can I just run Unrevoked and be rooted in no time?
 
So that is basically the program HTC uses to update their phones? Where can I get this RUU? I have the latest OTA installed.
 
This is a HTC official ruu, it flashes everything to restore to factory condition. This is what HTC techs use.

You connect phone to pc and run it from there

Don't disconnect the cable or remove the battery and everything is fine.

So basically this can always restore my phone in any situation? Whatever happens, with this file I will be safe?
 
Mostly. If you get a hardware fault preventing the phone from booting, or somehow manage to perm brick your phone (unlikely) then nothing will save you. Other than that though, yep.

In what cases does this perm-brick happen? I'm slightly paranoid :D

But HTC won't notice the phone has ever been rooted?

EDIT: I don't need unrevoked forever, do I? Since Unrevoked 3 sets it to S-OFF automatically?
 
Just one of the unrevoked 3 ones. It doesn't S-off GSM desires (uses SIM card), just CDMA (no SIM card).

Dont forget to check what PVT version you are from the Hboot screen. Look in the rooting faq. If it is PVT4, there are special steps needed to be taken.

Bricking can happen if you flash the wrong radio for your device, or you pull the cable or power out when you flash a radio. You wont really need to be flashing radios.

Never seen anything permanently brick a phone personally, but im sure there is a 0.0001% chance you could.

If its bricked, Im not sure what HTC can tell to be honest

read through everything, especially the faq's before hand. Try and understand as much as you can about what it is you are doing and trying to achieve. This information could be valuable if things go wrong.

The FAQ also does prep you for some problems you may encounter on the road.

I would recommend bite sized chunks.

Root one day, custom rom another.
