I have heard a lot of people mention rooting their phones, not to appear dumb or anything but what is rooting and what are the advantages and also disadvantages of it? Is it easy to do? Is rooting like the androids version of jail breaking?? Can someone help me out here! Want to know more so I can maybe see about doing this. Also is it reversable say if i had it done and needed to go back?

Thanks 📱👍

you just put a new system on your phone (like from windows vista to windows 7) only that the system is developed from other persons and not from Sony or whoever.. In most of the cases its bether (you choose which system you install on your phone) and there are additional functions and you can also use some apps more (f.e. screen recording)
its not hard to do but you should know what you do, i'm sure there are many tutorials that teach you how to root your phone.

PS: this answer is just what I know, no professional answer claimed

Thanks, Is there a lot of different kinds of alternative software for a phone? Do you know of any websites that might have more info and possibly videos etc? ☺

Rooting won't put an alternative firmware on your device, but it's generally the first step towards that.

Rooting basically grants you super user access to the phone, allowing you change themes/settings/access stuff that isn't normally accessible to the average user.

For an overview of what root is, take a look here: http://androidforums.com/faqs/443432-what-root-being-rooted-mean.html

The root process differs from handset to handset and software version to software version. For how to root the Z1, take a look here: http://androidforums.com/xperia-z1-all-things-root/843542-rooting-4-3-4-4-a.html

DarkyROM is for Samsung Galaxy handsets only by the looks of things and will not work on the Xperia Z1.
