Root Rooting with linux?

I've set up SuperOneClick and associated libraries on my Linux box, following the excellent instructions here. However, when I attempt to root, SuperOneClick stops at

chmod rageagainstthecage...

Does anybody know what might be happening here, and how I can get past this?
