Rooting

I am debating between the Hero and the Moment. I have a few ?'s.

What is the purpose of rooting, what features do you not have IF you choose not to root and does rooting void your warranty on the phone?

I understand it is a way to give you administrator access to the operating system and in turn allow you to customize and control many options you wouldn't usually have access to.
