Root Rooting

Michael9

Lurker
Hi, I'm new to this forum but i've been looking around to get a basic understanding before i root (if i decide to)
I'm on 3 Network in the UK and I think my phone is branded:

Android Version: 2.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.21-gf3f553d
Software Number: 1.37.771.3

I basically want to remove the preinstalled apps that were already on my phone, i've found out that I can do this by rooting. However, I don't want to change the android OS to a custom one. If I root my phone, will I keep the current android OS, but have the ability to uninstall the preinstalled apps, and will I be able to unroot after this? Also, will it affect my contract besides the warranty/insurance?

Thanks

Yes you can keep the current firmware and remove the preinstalled apps. And yes, you can unroot afterwards.

And no, it doesn't affect your contact.

Thanks for the reply!
Can you send me in the right direction for some tutorials please?
And I couldnt find anything on rerooting, could you send me a link?

Thanks again

You just need to install this app and pick the temp root option, which means root access won't persist after a reboot. You can perma root if that suits you more, as the app can also unroot the phone later on.

Then you should go to the market and install 'titanium backup'. Launch the app and hit the 'Problems?' button at the bottom, which installs busybox, something titanium needs to work. Then you should see a 'Backup/Restore' tab at the top of titanium backup. Hit that and it will show you a list of every app on your phone. You can then click on an app and pick the option to uninstall.

But you should be aware that this list contains every single app on your phone - some of which are vital to the phone's operation (e.g, removing google talk will break your market). You can't do any damage that reinstalling the firmware wouldn't fix, but don't be afraid to ask here if you're not sure what you can/can't uninstall :)

Oh and something to keep in mind.... Once you've done this, if ever you should need to claim on your warranty, I would reinstall your firmware. Yes, you can unroot the phone, but you've left behind busybox that titanium backup installed. To be honest, this probably isn't necessary, but it's what I would do.

I just wanted to find out as much as I could before I went ahead with this as I've only just got the phone.
I was looking at uninstalling these apps (a long list, i know!):

amazon mp3
brick breaker
car panel
desk clock
gmail
latitude
news
news and weather
stocks
tetris
twitter
weather
yell

most of these i either don't need and will never use, or i have multiple apps that do the same job.

How would I reinstall the firmware again and where would i download it? I'm having a guess that buy firmware you mean the Android version which is FroYo 2.2?

I do apologise for all these questions haha

I'm 100% certain you can remove:
amazon mp3
brick breaker
car panel
yell
tetris
twitter

I can't see why you couldn't remove these, but the fact they are part of HTC Sense may cause complications:

desk clock
news
news and weather
stocks
weather

I would be wary about removing these, since they are google apps:
gmail (especially)
latitude

Luckily, you can use titanium backup to backup all of these apps before you uninstall them. Then you can reinstall any that cause problems.

If you find your build number in settings >> about phone, you can then find the 'RUU' for that build number. RUUs are PC programs that reinstall the firmware via a USB connection, putting it totally back to stock.
