Root Rooting ..... ?

So, I am sure these threads pop up all the time and I apologize if this is repetitive. I want to take my smart phone ability and knowledge to the next level and am considering rooting my Razr. But, I am VERY green when it comes to the ins and outs of what goes on behind the curtains of my phone so to speak, so am turning to the forums for some guidance and tutelage. My main questions are: what are the drawbacks to rooting (yes I know it voids the warranty) and how difficult it is. Also, some help on what to add if rooted would be appreciated. Here's kind of what I would like form a root, if it helps:

1) I want to get rid of apps I don't want. I currently have about 14 between Moto, Verizon, and Google that I just don't want but can't get rid of .... annoying.
2) Would like to use WiFi hotspot without having Verizon trying to shake me down.
3) Anything that further improves my already pretty awesome phone.

Thanks so much for your patience guys!:D

I had my X rooted, my Razr will be delivered today. I'm not sure if I'll root it, but will definitely be after the ICS update. Besides the warranty you risk the chance of "bricking" it. That just means it won't work and is as useless as a brick.

Other advantages are being able to overclock it for faster performance, and use different ROMs for endless customization. You can also take a screen shot, but that will come with ICS.

I'm sure there is more, good luck.

Wow ... that seems kind of daunting. My big fear is screwing it up to a point where I brick it or make it unusable.

I may be out of my element a bit. will have to mull it over. Thanks for the guide, Bugly.

Try Foxfi from the google play store its free, and will allow you to use mobile wifi hotspot to power other devices on your network.
Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks. I will check that app out! Still debating on rooting. Funny, but sort of related side note.

I have an OG Droid sitting at home collecting dust ... works fine, just don't use it. I wish there was a way to root it so that it could be a devoted true GPS, not just preloaded maps; I geocache and would love to use it for that purpose.
