i am a novice when it comes to programming. What can I do to get some assistance with rooting my Note 2 SGH t889?

The most useful thing I have found for my note2 is this:
[Galaxy Note2 TOOLKIT V4.1.0 GSM] Drivers, Backup, Root, Recovery, Flash Stock Image - xda-developers
I suggest that as well as installing it on your PC and studying all its options (before doing anything to your phone) you google rooting and read as much as you can on the subject so that you understand the terms used and what hboot, bootloader, recovery, ROM, efs, etc. mean BEFORE you do anything.
If you understand what you are doing you can avoid mistakes - just dont rush in!
Joining the android forums and subscribing to the "all things root" section in the note2 forum would be a good idea so that you can get help easily if needed :]
