Rooting?

I have heard much about rooting phones and devices but do not quite understand what it is. So could anyone help me figure out what it is? What does it do? Is it illegal? How do you do it? Is it dangerous? Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forums. Now rooting isn't illegal, but it will void your warranty if it is done the wrong way. People root for many reasons such as I do the rooting to change things such as the full theme . some themes are written for some android devices now if you root you can get the feel for other themes that are not written for your device . some people like to explore the android system like myself to see what some files do and what folders inside the system can do when I found out that and taken my world to knowing what java is and can do I tried to make my own ROM . yes another thing many of us root for . yes the running of the custom ROM world many new features and many ways to see if your device is as fast as they say . custom ROMs have features such as speed kernels and these speed kernels allow the android user to over clock your device and when the over clock has taken place this feature if performed correctly and you know your android system you can use the oc aka over clock and will not burn out your battery . I hope I didn't confuse you and I hope I didn't make your head spin :confused::D:what:

Just look at the following

http://lifehacker.com/5789397/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-rooting-any-android-phone

Also the reason we say what is a custom ROM

http://www.androidauthority.com/what-is-a-custom-rom-android-74072/

And we all root and this is the biggest thing to save you from a void warranty and that is always asked what is a custom recovery

LAST THING BUT FIRST THING TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A CUSTOM RECOVERY.. (SCREAMING) MAKE A BACKUP WITH YOUR RECOVERY.

I'll check out those links for sure! Thank you so much for explaining. And if I may ask another question, how do I correctly go about rooting my device?

Brainz pretty much has it nailed, but a bit of advice..

I don't root my devices. Its just a lot more secure. Its a bit restrictive, but much more secure. Apps can delete files that will turn your device into a brick if your not careful while rooted, but then if your rooted there's plenty of up sides as well.

For me its security and a little bit of laziness.
