Hi
There is a lot of info on the web (and these forums) about this, but put simply
Gaining root access on a phone is like having the administrator password on a windows PC. It lets you access and alter ALL the files/system on the phone. Normal, "non-rooted" phones only allow users access to data areas which are not part of the operating system.
In itself rooting a phone does not change the phone in any way BUT it does mean you can change it completely if you want to.
