Root Running cm7 off sd, can't get gapps to install

So I inherited a nook color (yes color, not the newer one with the mic) and I decided to give Android a try.
I bought a 16gb sd card, downloaded CM7 and all that good stuff.
I have CM7 running, but at first I could not get gapps to install because I couldn't get the nook into recovery mode.
I managed that, but now, oh jeez, it will go all the way through recovery and then hit a wall.
I power it up after it's run through recovery, I unlock it, and then I get the message "Unfortunately, Setup Wizard has stopped"
I hit ok, and then the message pops up again, and again, and again.
I tried re-imaging the SD card, and re-installing CM7, no beans.

I have all the latest updates, so what am I doing wrong?

Should I just root the dern thing?

That depends on what you want to do with it. Rooting just gives you (and the apps you run that need it) administrative access - like running a program in Windows by right-clicking it and clicking Run as administrator.

Root won't change anything if you're not running an app that doesn't require root.
