Root Running from SD - real slow

I broke down and bought a NC and I'm running Android off of an SD card. But the performance is sloooow and balky. When it isn't freezing up for a bit, it is acting odd. For example, I can open Angry Birds, but I can't play it because it interprets pulling back on the slingshot as zooming.

I want to run Android off of the SD card because my wife wants it to run as a Nook when she uses it. But with the performance I've experienced so far, it borders on being unusable as a tablet.

I just bought the card (16gb) with everything preinstalled off of eBay because I didn't want to spend the time trying to set up the card myself. I don't see anything about class (i.e. 6 or 10 etc.) on the card. If this isn't one of the faster cards, could that be part of the problem?

If the card isn't the problem, what else might be causing the problems I'm seeing?

TIA
Tom

If it's not a sandisk it's going to be slow. Read up about it here

It says Wintec filemate HC. No speed was given in the listing. I should have inquired.

Should I get a Sandisk and copy the files over?

It's not that easy. Often that card has several partitions and each one needs to be created and copied over. Might as well start over from scratch, which defeats buying a $30+ card.

You will probally have to start from scrach and make one yourself. Also honeycomb itself is very buggy as Google has not and will not release the source code. Go with CM7.

The card that I bought was advertised as having Gingerbread, not Honeycomb - though I wouldn't know how to tell them apart. I do know that it says Cyanogenmod in some menu that I looked through. I may not have CM7, but I have something by CM.

Well, I'm a little bummed out over this. If I need to do this on my own, any recommendations on what card should I buy?

Even better, could anyone recommend a reliable vendor that I could just buy the card from?

Both Cnet and engadget did a story about an amazon store that sold them. I cannot find a link though. I would suggest just doing it yourself as it will save 20+ dollars for about a half hour of your time. You can follow my directions here or these directions that are easy to follow. As for an SD card as I mentioned before sandisk is the way to go. You can get an 8 gb card for about 12 bucks at costco.

I doubt you'll find one. I'm using a Sandisk 16gb class 4 and that was the fastest I could find on Amazon. My Walmart didn't even have class 4's.

Higher class sdcards are faster with larger files (like pics/videos), but our android devices generally have small files.

It's all about how the card is optimized. :D

I thought the higher class meant higher speed. Of not, what is the significance of the higher class?

Higher class means higher sustained read/write speeds but to reach those speed manufacturers degrade the random read/write. That is good for transferring big files quickly between computer and SD card but not for running the entire android OS.

Well, I found a 16 gb Sandisk locally, so I'm going to give this a try. Expect either an AAAAARGH or a YIPPPEEE shortly.

Congrats, I got a Kingston 8 gig class 4 that works well.

I first got a Patriot 16 gig class 10, looks like I have a 16 gig storage card since it wouldn't work at all for SD booting.

Been almost two weeks, and it is still working great. Wife enjoys it as a tablet, and is even talking about eventually investing in a full-fledged tablet with a bigger screen and 3G (or better) before next years vacation.

I don't know if you need 32 GB, but I will say that it's running very well for me. I'd say if there is any chance at all that you may think you have the ability to root or make a card or your own, get the 8 GB and just see how much you like Android on the Nook.

I have the 8 GB and it's incredibly smooth. On Amazon, a 16 GB micro SD card is like $18 or so. For me, the $21 difference in buying it from N2A was worth my sanity of trying to root or make my own card.

If you do get a card, I'd say get it from them. I know there are people on Ebay that sell cards, but someone else on the board got one from there and it didn't work out that well for him/her.
