Russia: Attack on Tehran is Attack on Moscow

Russia has given Iran its bear hug and warns Israel and the West that an attack on Tehran would be considered an attack on Moscow. The threat heightens the prospect of World War III in the event of amilitary strike on Iran.

First, Russia isn't running to anyone's aid. They have too many problems of their own.

Two, no one is attacking Iran. We've been putting sanctions on North Korea for decades.

Three, Israel's Mossad and their secret nuclear arms will keep Iran in check.

Four, no one is crazy enough to launch a nuclear attack. Iran's only target would be anywhere in Israel, which would cost them any and all supporters and they know that. Being alone sucks, when North Korea starts to be a dick and China is like the sober friend calming the drunk friend down at a bar.

Five, the president of Iran is not well liked by his people/ruling religious sects.

Six, it is understandable why Iran is being a dick on this issue. They've had American troops on both sides of them for almost ten years. Wouldn't you be nervous if the Venezuelans invaded Mexico and fighting a war for almost ten years along your border? For WMD's that weren't there?

:) thanks for the detailed info. I really liked, the sober friend calming down the drunk friend part.

Just a little bit more on whats going on (according to a book on cyber war I'm reading)...

Russia is apparently quite upset towards the western world (I'm guessing cold war tensions). When they had the tiff with Georgia, they blamed the USA for it (according to this book), not entirely, but definitely thought/say we were involved.

Israel and Iran (and a lot of that region) have been going back and forth with cyber attacks on each other for quite some time... It isn't completely related, but definitely in the same ball park... Just a little extra ;)

But cyber attacks are kind of the norm. Its to be expected, you know like how these guys staff their embassies with spies. Just a cost of doing business.

Doesn't Russia provide a bunch of weapons to Iran? I guess I would defend my best customer as well.

I wouldn't bet on that. If Iran makes good on its threat to blockade the Strait of Hormuz then the US and the UK won't have much choice but to un-blockade it, IMHO.

Of course we would clear it, I've heard of this scenario since the 90's. Even trained for it when I was part of a FAST. Were not looking to get into a land war with Iran, just enough to move them out of the way. And we could destroy their navy in a matter of days.

“Iran is our neighbor,” Russia's outgoing ambassador to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, told reporters in Brussels. “And if Iran is involved in any military action, it’s a direct threat to our security.”

Translation:
"Iran shares a border with us. If Iran is involved in any military action it's going to call for help from Islamists in Chechnya and Dagestan, and sooner or later they're going to come home with lots of shiny new killing toys to try out on us."

Besides which, a blockade of the Strait would be a superb business opportunity. "Roll up roll up! Get your fine Siberian petroleum products here... much cheapness!" :)

You know you're giving all the tinfoil types fodder..."it's about the oil"....

The history books show that, where that part of the world is concerned, it's always about the oil (or some other resource). Always has been for more than a century, always will be. :(

Yup, no tinfoil hattedness about it. there hasn't been a genuine threat to the UK's soverignity since WWII, everything since has been muscle flexing and resource protecting.

E.g., in the most recent Iraq war, one of the first mission objectives for British and American troops was to secure the oil fields. True story.

We've been screwing that part of the world over since the days of the 'British Empire'. It should come as no surprise that few in the Arab world trust us now. :(

^ True, but don't forget that there's a not insignificant younger generation in Iran that wants stronger links with the west, not more isolationism, and are not particularly happy with their current government. Unfortunately the current escalating war of words, sanctions, or even conflict is playing directly into the hands of the die hard old guard. What we should also be doing is demonstrating to the youth of Iran that we're interested in more than just punishing their country.

Which ties nicely into another topic in here, http://androidforums.com/politics-current-affairs/478823-u-s-rescues-iranian-ship-held-pirates.html

What is it that's said about actions speaking louder than words? ;)

Hindsight is wonderful, but I wish the West had given a bit more thought to their actions in the past. The partitioning that went on after WW1, the whole Palestine/Israel fiasco after WW2, the behind-the-scenes meddling during the '50s, '60s and '70s, the double-dealing with Iran and Iraq in the '80s.... we're reaping what we sowed by giving extremists, both nationalist and religious, ammunition. :(

No one should trust the Russian government. The Cold War may technically be over, but in reality it never ended.

You can bet if Iran tries to block the straights, that the West will respond. If Russia wants to get involved, I feel sorry for them.

Tbf a lot of that was the French's fault is well, I would be loath to lay the majority of the blame at the Brits feet. Maybe if the Franco-British unity state went ahead during WWII the creation of a Pan-Arab state would've come about, but France had no appetite for it.
