Root S-Off and its necessity for ROM flashing

Ok, so heres my problem. My Desire is rooted, flashed with Gingervillain 1.9 and is very much S-On.

I rooted my new Desire Z to permanence, but now every guide I use is going on about how necessary S-Off is for flashing ROMs, which I had never really considered doing.

I know this is the Desire forum, but I'm sure someone must know whether or not I need S-Off on my Z before I flash a ROM, and it's pretty dead over there...

Well you've flashed ROMs on your Desire without being S-Off, so I can't see why it would be needed for the Z. I have it, but that was because I wanted to fiddle with other things.

BTW, congrats on your run of luck with the raffle yesterday!

Going by the Desire HD, they just perm root with visionary+ and flash with ROM manager (bah humbug). Most guides go through S-off aswell, but Im queitly confident it is not essential.

I think I'm going to give it a go, seeing as you two were the exact people I was hoping would reply. If it works, I will shower you with the gift of thanks, which is actually a literal thing on this forum. :)

(If not, I'll still give you the thanks)

OK, I tried to flash Clockworkmod from ROM Manager, just for simplicity and when I booted into recovery, I got the red triangle with an exclamation mark icon... any ideas?

Its because you havent true flashed clockwork recovery, so HTC recovery is still there.

Vol up + Power should do the trick

Did you check your SD card now has "update.zip" on the root of it?

Maybe S-off is required to flash a recovery that allows update.zip?

Actually, looking at your thread, Slug says S-off is required. I can tell you that Slug definitely knows his stuff, so chances are you're going to have to gfree

Most likely due to the growing popularity of Data++ and N1/CM7/Oxygen HBOOT tables, honestly those stuff annoy me.
