Root S-Off help please

Ok so I finally got the RUU to install and unlocked the boot loader. When running control bear, it starts up, connects to device, but hangs on testing adb connection. Fast boot is unchecked and debugging is on. Adb commands work to reboot boot loader too ?
 
Which guide are you using? What is your operating system? Windows? Linux? 32-bit, 64-bit? Are the files you're trying to use (adb, fastboot, ControlBear) all in the same folder? Are you running ControlBear as an administrator or superuser?
 
Windows 7, 64 bit. Yes, they are all in the same folder and running as administrator. Any help would be great. It's been a process for me
 
I just sent you a PM. I'm thinking it has something to do with your drivers or a control-access problem. It's difficult to say without looking into specifics like your version of the HTC Drivers, whether you have HTC Sync installed, etc. Also, some people have had luck with a 64-bit configuration whereas others have not.
 
These drivers may be what you need. Unless I'm mistaken about how to install drivers on Windows, you should be able to right-click on the .inf file and install that way. A reboot may be required before the changes "take" on your system.

Before you install those drivers, uninstall any that are currently installed.
 
In my opinion you should get S-OFF. There's little risk, and it opens up a bunch of possibilities/lots of cool stuff to play with.
 
One thing I just thought of... is your phone booted into the ROM or is it in bootloader? If you're in bootloader, boot the ROM, then run ControlBear.
 
Yea so it won't let me install those drivers either. Has to be a computer problem. Thanks for the help but I'll just let it go for now until I can have somebody check out the computer
 
Ok I've tried everything I can think of to get controlbear to work and my computer will not update my drivers. Is there drivers for Windows 8? I will try to use my wife's laptop if there is. Would like to just get it working on my Windows 7 because she doesn't like me putting programs on her computer

Create an Ubuntu LiveCD and do it the supported way.

No drivers at all to deal with, kinda like an Apple product..."it just works" :D

EDIT:

The more threads I read like this one, the more sympathy I have for the Unlimited crew. I wouldn't want to track down OS issues for 8 different versions of OS either. They have a "fool proof" method setup. Not using it exactly as prescribed means that variables are introduced. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. They don't want to spend any time ironing out the details...their policy is: "Do it our way, or hit the highway"

Luckily for those of us who don't like to follow the rules...there's plenty of support in this forum to help you bend a few JBear rules. In the case of the OP...the rules aren't bending. So again, I suggest Ubuntu LiveCD. That's what I did :)
 
I agree, just be aware that because of the size of the latest releases of Ubuntu you'll actually be using a LiveDVD. :p

Except even using Ubuntu isn't supported by the unlimited.io staff at this point for VM users on hboot 1.58. When brian706 went on their IRC channel and asked about the 1.58 hboot for VM users they essentially said they won't support it if they haven't tested and documented that version regardless of which OS is used.

I was thinking about it some more and an S-ON VM user that has taken both OTA's could almost tell the unlimited.io staff that the Evo V 4G is an Evo 3D since the baseband and bootloader would be the same versions. The problem is that the CID is different and there's no VM RUU to flash in that situation. If the phone was already rooted the best you could do is flash the stock recovery and an unrooted stock ROM, but one look at the build.prop and it will be obvious that it's an Evo V.

I'm not recommending lying to get support but the phones are really close after the March OTA's have been applied and I'm pretty sure the JBear procedures for the Evo 3D will work for an S-ON Evo V 4G on hboot 1.58 even if unlimited.io doesn't support that. The hboot zip files in both versions of the Windows ICS download files already have the Sprint and VM CID's in the android-info.txt files.

ok so the livecd is greek to me lol. New to HTC and had it easy with rooting before coming from the Optimus and Triumph. Can you point me in the right direction? And how much does it cost?

It was greek to me too. Luckily I have a Linux Guru on speed dial who gave me some advice. I'm not sure there's a step by step hand-holding guide on this. There are some commands that you may need to move the files around and untar (unzip) them. So even the LiveCD will be a challenge.

Is there anyone in this thread who can provide some basic Ubuntu syntax for him as well as accessing the terminal? Step 7 of the JBear instructions requires a simple working knowledge of Ubuntu:

7. Untar ALL files from the download into a new folder

After that, the Unlimited instructions are pretty straightforward I think.

Colossus,

You have a Linux guy here willing to help you out. You'll either need a USB drive (assuming your BIOS allows booting from USB). You'll want to change the boot order to that it boots from USB. Or you'll want to burn a DVD (it's 753MB, and doesn't fit on standard CDs). Even after you burn the DVD, you'll need to adjust the boot order through BIOS to the DVD Drive.

If you don't want to donate, there's a link in the lower left that says: "not now, take me to the download >" Click on that, save it, and use an ISO burner to make the LiveCD (do not simply place the file on a DVD). After that, Remanifest can get you a running start on interacting with Ubuntu.
 
unlimited.io says not to use a bootable USB key. Kind of a pita because unlike a DVD, the USB key can save the download from unlimited and be rebooted.

As daunting as many find the idea of the wire trick, it is now even more difficult for those who are not great at messing around with computers. I suspect that unlimited is seeing fewer downloads of its utility.

The Linux Guru I mentioned earlier told me not to use the USB either. It stemmed from his lack of understanding on whether or not I needed to do anything special to the USB drive to work properly with Linux file structure or something along those lines ( I can't remember most of our conversation). He urged me to go the DVD route to eliminate potential variables.
