Help S pen handwriting problems

Ok so I know next to nothing about androids or smart tablets. I received the Galaxy Note 8.0 for christmas and I'm trying to work it out. Yesterday, when using the calendar and wechat, I was able to use the stylus to write instead of typing. Today, that function seems to have disappeared. Looking on the internet, it seems that when the s pen is detached, it should automatically give me the handwriting box option. But it doesn't. I also can't find any answers as to how to fix that, or why it won't work.

Help? Ideas?
 
A look at the keyboard, Samsung style, you will note on the bottom left, a microphone lurking. Start there with a long winded press.
