S2 keeps forgetting file associations

Hi everyone,

My phone (Samsung S2, on JB) keeps forgetting what app I associate each file with. I do the following set of operations on a regular basis: I tap on a file of a specific type (say, TXT), the window pops up asking me what app I'd like to use to open it with, I tap on my desired app and choose "Always open with this app", and then tap OK on the annoying reminder that appears everytime ("You can change these associations from..").

Associations I make in this way for several file types are then subsequently remembered for a few times, but not before long, opening any type of file again brings up the "Choose app" window, and the cycle continues.

I know that this is normal to happen if you update any apps that are set by default to open a certain file type, but the problem I mentioned happens even during weeks when I don't do any app updates at all.

Can anyone suggest how to fix this? Many thanks in advance!

Hello wildetudor.

That sounds like ordinary S2 behavior. It can be remedied by finding a 3rd party app for the file association assignments. I don't have an S2, so more insight about that might be gained at the device area here at AF where users of your version congregate.

Do you still have the International version? If so:

Thanks for your reply! I would have thought that this is an Android issue, and thus one that manifests itself on every phone, not just on the S2

We do see it across S3 and S2 more than other Galaxy devices. I don't recall seeing it on Moto or HTC.. with the caveat of course that an update (to the operating system or an affected app and its services) could make that happen on any Android device.

In that case, doing a factory data reset would remedy the issue. I always try to remember to remind users doing an FDR to do a back up and cache wipe first, but restore 3rd party apps and widgets one at a time, testing in between for issues. It takes time and angst.. but well worth avoiding the risk of importing the problem right back into the system. ;)

If you haven't found a defaults manager yet here's one. Copy the text from the Web link below and paste it into your Web browser

Thanks. I can't believe you have to get an external app for that though, when this is clearly something that the OS should just remember as instructed! :(
