Help S3 battery level dropping 20-30% instantly..

Hello everyone, I'm having an annoying issue with my S3 and I'm not sure if this is just a glitch that happens sometimes or if I'm inadvertently destroying phones somehow..
This is my second S3, the first was replaced after I had issues getting it to charge, upon investigation I was told it was corrosion and they replaced my phone.
My new S3 is about 2 months old and though it's charging perfectly, when I unplug the phone in the morning it will say 100% battery level, and then the level will instantly drop down to 60-70%.. Not gradually like it's being used up..

This does not seem normal. I would again discuss getting a replacement.

I agree that sounds like a bad battery, try using a different one before having the device replaced all together

You buy a new phone and you think someone should just buy another battery if the phone is discharging quickly? What is wrong with asking for a warranty on this battery. If it's the battery and I am also thinking yes it is the battery.;)

Nobody said to buy a new battery. We said to TRY a different battery. Take it back to where you bought it and see what they say. If it's new then yes they should cover it under warranty. Or if you know someone else with the same phone see if you can try their battery so you know what's wrong. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. My phone is brand new, which means I received a new charger and battery as well.
I have the extended warranty so it's possible I can get a battery under warranty. If not, before I spend the extra cash, do you think this could be caused by an app?

My first phone dropped charge like this as well but I thought it was just because it wasn't charging properly to begin with.. My husband has an identical phone and has never had this happen so could it be an app that I have, which he does not, and that I have had on both the old phone and new one?

Try powering down the phone to close all open apps. Then power up again and recharge to 100% and repeat your test.

Or, install your DH's battery in your phone and test.

I am having a similar problem. It literally happened over night. I went to bed and put my phone on charger (was at about 15%), when I woke up, it was 100% per normal and I have done this for the last 8-10 months. About 30 minutes after taking it off the charger, it was at 80%. About an hour later it was red telling me to connect my charger. I turned the phone off and on and recharged. As long as the phones on, it will not reach 100%. Goes to maybe 65%. If its off, if will go to 100% in an hour or 2. I woke up this morning with my phone on the charger, but turned off. It showed 100%. I turn it on and its at 45%. I take the battery out of my daughters phone and put my batter in hers, and it reads 100%, yet her battery in mine reads 61%. If I leave my phone off, it may go up to 77% when I turn it on. I have had her battery on my phone for about 4 hours as I type this and its at 39% and hers is at 89% and shes been playing on it. I haven't even made a phone call. I am going to call att and see about getting a replacement but thought I would ask here before going that route. Thanks for any help.

Just a small update, my phone is now at 15% and telling me to put it on charger and hers is at 84%. When I look at the battery, it says its been on battery for 13hr 27min. I have turned it off and swapped the battery. Shouldn't it have reset the counter? My daughters did.

My husband is away and I do not have another phone to swap batteries with at the moment, and my warranty is apparently much more complicated because it's a phone provided by the third-party warranty on my first phone.....

Anyways, I deleted all the apps that I could which I knew were on both phones but not my husbands, and today is the second day in a row that the battery percentage has not plummeted and in the evening after a full days use I still have around 50% charge left (it wasn't lasting a full day before).

I highly recommend GSam Battery Monitor, as well as Wakelock Detector. Both were recommended to me through Android Forums and both helped me see which apps might have been causing excess battery drain. Hopefully the problem is really just as simple as an app that wasn't functioning properly.

Thanks Everyone!

None2Slow - I had battery problems with my first phone, which wasn't charging properly. It was constantly connecting and disconnecting with the power source and a few people suggested that my phone was developing a memory..
I'm really no expert, but maybe you should try what was recommended to me above, to drain the phone and charge it to 100% while still turned off. It might help reset things.

It's a pain, but ATT will also probably suggest it, you can try a factory reset. I hate it when people tell me to do that because it's really a last resort, but if you're thinking of getting the phone replaced it might save you a few $$

I ran the phone completely dead, then charged it fully to 100%. Turned phone on and it said 50%. Left it on and it was dead in 2-3 hours. Put the battery in my daughters phone and it was at 79%. I called ATT yesterday and explained this to them. They are sending me another phone. They agree that its a phone problem and not a battery problem. Will see what happens when I get the phone. Hope to have it by Friday. Will update.
