S4 Mini-Different WiFi?connection issue

Hello all,
I have tried to find the answer to this but have had no luck so thought I would see if someone can help me on here.

I have the S4 Mini and all works well as far as I can see except for the Wi-Fi connections away from home.

The problem I seem to have is that the phone will not connect all the time to the Wi-Fi connections when I am out and about. (Public area's, Hotels, Cloud etc)
I have a few apps that will connect to my home broadband without an issue and work fine but, when I am away from home and connect to another Wi-Fi service, I open the apps and nothing but a blank screen most of the time. Facebook will not update, My CCTV app will not connect, Youtube etc is blank. The free tv viewers etc will not connect. I get FB and Sky news updates sometimes but not always. I also find it helps if I turn the Wi-Fi off completely but, that still doesn't work with video streaming and only adds to cost if it does work at all.

Am I being completely thick here and have my settings wrong as I do not understand why they all work fine at home but nowhere else?

Any help appreciated please as it is driving me mad.

I know this doesn't help but you might have the WiFi gremlins like me. My connectivity is better with the updated KitKat, 4.4 O.S. Have you updated? Who is your carrier?

My carrier is Vodafone...could itbe an issue with them?

Does my phone have to be rooted for kitkat?
