S4 unknown Call log icon

Every so often my phone does not ring, but I get a text message saying I missed a call.
The call is listed in the call logs as a left pointing green arrow with what looks like an envelope to the right of it.
The text message arrives at the same time as the logged missed call in the call logs.

This happens randomly, with the same callers getting through and the phone ringing correctly most of the time.

Probably a spammer. We had a spate of those a couple of months ago. They dialed directly into your voicemail and the phone never rang.

The ones I heard purported to come from Verizon, to get you to switch, but they were spam. You'd only get half the message as the idiots didn't know how to work the software.

The calls are from people I know, on known phone numbers.

Why and how would it be a voice mail, how would that work? The last person to call me just called my number as usual, from a cell phone.

There's apps and ways to dial into VM only:

This an answer from a TMO rep about the VM only calls.

"I have personally experienced this, too. We don't have a solution to blocking them at this time. We do know that this has been reported although there's no follow-up as to a time frame or resolution at this point."

Maybe your phone had no signal when the person tried to call you?

The log entry with the envelope is a text message log.

The carrier may have sent you a message telling you that someone tried to call you, but your phone might not have been able to receive the call at the time, usually because poor or no signal, e.g you were in a lift, underground car park, subway, tunnel, etc. In which case nothing would show in the call log, because the phone never received the call.

Checking on my Note 2, a left pointing green arrow with an envelope in the call logs signify a received sms.
