how can I get my photos out of my phone.i have a usb cord and kies.

You shouldn't need kies. Just connect it to a computer via usb and there should be an option to use MTP to copy files to the computer (I don't know the S5 active, but either it will be the default or you'll have to click on a notification to change the connection type). Once you have that done you can just copy stuff using Windows Explorer.
If you are using a Mac then install Google's Android File Transfer program, after which you should be able to just open that plus a Finder window and drag files from one to the other.
(I'm assuming that since you have Kies you aren't using Linux).
