Help S5 POP3 Sync Stops Randomly

S5synch

Lurker
Trying to sync POP3 email to a Samsung S5 from Sprint.

Outlook 2010 on desktop works fine accesing the email via POP3. Old phone had no problems syncing email as well.

Sync works for an hour or maybe a day, then stops. Refresh doesn't work (and it doesn't seem to be even trying to sync). Sync is on. Autosync Data is on. Airplane mode is off. Rebooting makes no difference. Took it to the Sprint store and they were no help except to verify that the email settings appear correct.

The only way I've found to get it to sync again is to delete the email account and add it again, but alas it just stops syncing again after a while.

Thanks for any ideas or help. (I'm going to install K-9 to see if I can work around this.)

IMAP is a protocol that goes back in the eighties, so I guess you'll be fine ;)

Turns out IMAP settings are not enabled and the account is so old I don't have the info under my current GoDaddy acct so it is going to take a while for me to find the old info get it enabled.

K-9 is working so far, but it doesn't solve the original issue.

I switched to using my ISPs SMTP server and it has been working for a week with no issues. Even if the Godaddy server is total crap, I have no idea why the S5 would stop syncing. I found a number of similar old threads on various phones and no real answers in those, either.

Have you had any luck figuring this out? The same exact thing happens with my GoDaddy account. Have to remove and re-add the account to get it to receive email again. Did the IMAP connection work?

No luck figuring out what the exact problem is.

Samsung chat told me to try a soft reset:
remove the Email account. Main screen>> Apps>> Settings>> More>> Application Manager>> Swipe the screen from right to left till you see ALL option>>Scroll down for Email option>>Tap on it>>Tap on clear cache and clear data. Remove and re insert the device battery. Turn ON the phone and re configure the Email account

but I never got around to trying that, nor did I ever try IMAP since switching to using my ISP server to send is working.

I'm scared to change anything at this point so sorry I can't be of more help.

The info you were given sounds to me as accurate.
That will remove all info pertaining to the Email account w/o you having to Reset the phone to Factory Defaults.

it is a safe procedure, don't be afraid to do it.
Once done, you will be able to set up your email account(s) and they should sync correctly.

UPDATE: Phone worked for a couple of weeks and quit syncing again. Did soft reset, quit again after about a week.

I will try this reset from Samsung support next:

1.Power the device off (remove and re-insert the battery).
2.Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
3. When the device vibrates; release only the Power key.
4.When the Android system recovery menu displays; release the Volume Up and the Home key.
5.Navigate with the Volume keys to the wipe cache partition option and press the Power key to select.
6.After user data deletes, press the Power key to reboot system now

If this doesn't work, next step is full Factory Reset, UGH!!!

(Sprint says there's a problem with my ISP/settings, which is BS IMO because why does it work for a while and then quit if my settings are incorrect?)

Any fix to this? Mine does the same. It works for about two weeks and then stops checking my POP account. I delete it and re-add it, and it works for two more weeks. My work exchange account is fine.

What email is it? GoDaddy? Who is your carrier?

Sprint has told me:
1. The email settings are correct
2. The email settings are incorrect
3. The problem is with Comcast
4. The problem is with GoDaddy
basically, they have provided no assistance whatsoever.

I'm going to keep working on this for a little while, but I'm starting to get frustrated and may just end up returning the phone.

Well, my phone has been doing well since I got it Launch Day....

But now, Play Store keeps telling me that it needs Background Sync turned ON (which it is) and that it can't connect to my gmail server account.

Okay, created a new gmail account and deleted the old gmail account off the phone.
sigh! Play Store still says it gets a server error because it cannot "reach the server".

Everything else that uses the internet works just fine. I have made sure that anything with the name Google in it is ON and has Notifications enabled.

Still no joy.
