Help S5 Problem / Transfering Files

My Uncle bought an S5, and he's having an issue. We'll, I'm having the issue because I'm the one doing it for him. I own a S3 and so this is odd to me.

I have the USB drivers installed, and I can access the internal no problem. I'm still waiting on his micro sd to come. Anyway, I go into internal, into DCIM, into Camera, and there it is, the one video I made yesterday that I would like to drag and drop off the phone like I do my S3. Once I drag and drop to the desktop, I get a message something like, device is not functioning or something in those lines. I don't recall the exact message. Sometimes, I won't get the message, and it looks like it's going to copy, but then just times out, and I have to end task and disconnect the phone from the computer. Not sure what's going on but this is how I've done it with all my android phones.

Also, I set a lock pattern for him with a back up 4 digit pin, but when I lock the screen, and hit the power button, it just tells him to swipe. I rebooted the phone, and that fixed it for a few times, and now it just tells me to swipe, but when I go back into the lock screen settings, it still says it's secured with a pattern and if I press into it, it asks me for the pattern to change it but when I lock the screen and turn it on, just tells me to swipe. If I reboot the phone again, it works again for a short period of time.

I'm starting to think he got a defected phone, or perhaps the software is buggy. I told him we could try a factory reset, and see if that corrects the issues but I would need to back-up his contacts and I'm not sure if AT&T offers a back-up app like Metro does with their Metro Backup which stores all your contacts on their server and you can login via the phone, and download all your contacts.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Helium app is recommended a lot on this forum for backing up your apps.

Also, download Kies 3.0 and make a total image backup of the phone. That way, you can do a Factory Reset and once the phone is up again, go back to Kies 3.0 and do a Restore.

All the lockscreens, home screens, etc... will be like they are now.

Awesome thanks, but a backup really isn't needed as he didn't install any apps yet really. I just thought perhaps a reset would solve all the issues as it did on the S3 after that one update.

Does the image keep contacts? If so, it would perfect for a quick reset and restore.

yup, contacts, images, messages, whatever is on that phone.
It is a "disk image" of the phone's memory just like using Acronis or Reflex to perform a Disk Image of your PC's hard drive.

I've found Google to be really good at keeping back ups. Contacts, photos, etc.....

As for the lock screen issue, I'm not to sure of the S5. But make sure there isn't a double time out setting. For example, if the screen times out after 30 seconds or if the power button is hit, you have to wait an additional 5 minutes before the password lock is activated. I've seen some people mention that their phones have that option on their Android.

Oh and for the transferring, make sure your using the usb cord that came with the S5 and not the one that came with the S3. In addition to that make sure the software from the S5 loaded onto the computer and it's not trying to use the S3 software. Also you need to make sure the phone is being recognized as a mass storage device by the computer.

The "lock time" is configurable and separate from the Display Timeout (I set for 10 minutes).
Set Lockscreen "lock time" for Instant (I did) for any time your choosing. I prefer Instant, that way the phone will not unlock the screen and do something you don't want when you put it in your pocket.

Thanks for the confirmation. ......AZgl500

Indeed, I'm using the S5 cable, not the S3 cable. All the drivers are installed. I can access the file system, but the computer gives that error message or the phone just times out causing the computer to lock up. If a reset doesn't fix it, then it's the phone for sure.

Do I need to access the boot menus or anything to flash the image or just use Kies to restore the phone after the backup. So like, reset, everything goes back to default, and stock, then restore with Kies?

Just run Kies, it will store the image on your PC.

On new phone, or a Factory Reset phone, run Kies again and select Restore. It will ask which version if you made more than one backup.

I try to keep 3 copies on file. just use a Vs. number for them.

Indeed, I did a back-up of my phone to try it out. However, I'm not wiping my phone, but just did it just in case I ever had to.

I'm waiting on Unk to get home so I can back his up, and do a factory reset. I do have to admit tho, Kies seems pretty awesome and clean.

I'm having issues doing the backup with Kies with his S5.

Stuck on 1%.

I'm telling you, this specific phone itself is messed up, a dud...major lemon.

Ok, I stopped it, and ONLY said to back up contacts as that's all he needs backed up...

I clicked on restore just to make sure it's there, and it shows contacts backed up but under content it says there are no backup files to list, and under account information it says same thing..

so I'm not sure if the contacts are actually backed up.

I'm going to see if I can download something AT&T offers as a 2nd back up on contacts,

Ok it did...i delted my number, and did restore, and it added it back..

just did the factory reset

brb

Still won't let me drag and drop stuff....

NEVER had this issue on ANY android phone EVER before. I'm not sure why it won't let me copy files off the internal space of the phone. It honestly makes NO SENSE.

Hmmmm, I re read through the thread....... Try a different cord if you haven't yet. Also how did you set the phone up to be recognized or work with the computer, the first time you connected it?

Again, I installed the following drivers....

Support - AT&T Cell Phones SM-G900A | Samsung Cell Phones

I then plugged in the phone via the S5 USB cable.

I'm then able to navigate the file system as shown in the picture. You can see I'm inside the camera folder. I'm simply trying to drag and drop the video to my desktop, the SAME EXACT way I do it with EVERY SINGLE Android phone I have EVER had to xfer files between the phone and the computer.

For some reason, with the S5, that is what's happening, and I have no clue why.

I got the micro sd card today, popped it in, and I can't even transfer files to it when it's in the phone. For some reason this phone is just bugged to hell, and im guna make him swap it out. With Kies, I don't see why he wouldn't want to if it happens to be a defected phone.

Ok, well I got all the pictures and videos that I took off his iphone, and got it all on the card finally. It just seems it's a issue with transferring to and from internal.
