Safely install AT&T update on ROOTED Android?

Hey guys. I just recently downloaded (only downloaded, not yet installed) an AT&T update on my rooted android device. I've read around the internet that people updated their rooted androids and their phone was messing up. I was wondering if anybody knew how I could safely/correctly update my rooted android with the AT&T update that I just download.

I have a
Rooted AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note, USA just in case that was needed.

From what I understand, based on my S3, you need the stock recovery, take the update, then flash the SU zip again.
