same chipset - phone supports desired 3g freq, tablet doesn't

So, I have Lenovo A820 phone which has support for 3G 900mhz, works great. I bought a tablet which has the same chipset, Mediatek MTK6589, but it seems that the tablet does not support 3G 900mhz. I have thought that the chipset defines the 3G support, but is it so? Or is it software limitation? The tablet is unbranded, I guess since there are no logos and no text on the package or the tablet itself. Bootlogl says Mediatek.
 
It's a hardware limitation. The MTK6589 is really just the CPU, sometimes called System on Chip(SoC). Any cellular 3G radios are separate to the SoC or chipset. The Lonovo has it because it's a phone. Some tablets have 3G capabilities, some don't and are WiFi only.
 
Ok, I assumed that because the tablet has same chipset it would have 3g 900mhz, only possibly locked / disabled from software, but I cannot get 3G signal, only 2G since Iive in an area where only 900mhz 3g has coverage. Surfing with 2g speed is pain for most part.
 
2G and 3G are technically very different, so being able to use one in a particular frequency band does not mean you can necessarily use the other in the same band.

You should always check device specs, I'm afraid.

Yes, but. I simply thought that having same chip would give me same features, as far as I know 2G support is much better, so you could almost always be assured that you can get to internet atleast in 2G no matter how middle of nowhere you live. 3G 900mhz seems to be the problem and it is way too often missing.

It's more than just what a chip supports or not. There's other additional hardware required, like it needs a cellular antenna for a start. :)
