Samsung Ace 2: can't add favourites

I have an Ace 2 and it is easy to add to the favourites list by hitting the star against a name in Contacts. I have just bought a new Ace 2 for my wife and that feature is no longer there. There is still a tab for favourites on the Phone screen but I can find no way of adding any.

I have android version 4.1.2
OK thanks Smoky. Right, so from the opening screen I press Contacts. A list of names comes up.Four buttons at the top show ; phone, groups, favorites, contacts. If I press the favorites button I get a list of frequently contacted. if I go to the menu button at the bottom there is an option: add to favorites. if I press that i get a message : no contacts. There is a search line at the top. If I type in the nameof a contact i get ; no results found.
If I go back and select the contacts button at the top I get a list of contacts. If I press one of them I get the name and the phone number. Nothing happens if i press that screen other than to start a phone call. If I press the menu button at the bottom I get options to edit, delete, share, add to rejects, Print and add shortcut.
All very frustrating.

I'm also talking about JB 4.1.2
On my phone I have the star showing on the right top corner.

Right, so from the opening screen I press Contacts. A list of names comes up.

What I suggested was at this point for you to long press one of the contacts name to display the sub menu...

if I go to the menu button at the bottom there is an option: add to favorites. if I press that i get a message : no contacts.

But after reading this part I'm confused as the why your phone is not showing the contacts list to add to favourites ???

Have you tried to merge the contacts with Google yet ?
And do you mind to share what firmware is installed in the phone ?

OK I've sussed it. The contacts on the new phone are on the sim card from a previous phone. A long press on the contact does not bring up add to favourites. If a contact is added to the phone, rather than the sim, then it can be added to favorites as you describe.
Cheers.
