Samsung Dex

What is Dex? Does it work with the S5? I had never heard of it but I saw an ad for a "cube" that's supposed to turn a phone into a laptop, more or less. I sure hope that would include a bigger keyboard.

Requires Galaxy S8 and upwards. I've got a Huawei Mate 10 and a MateDock, that does similar. Enables you to use your phone as a sort of desktop or laptop PC, but it's still Android of course. Some apps are designed to make full use of a desktop monitor, others just stay in phone mode and operate windowed.

My MateDock is powered, so I can plug in hard drives, or even CD and DVD drives by USB. I can use whatever PC keyboard I like, and use the phone screen as a track pad, or run another app like as a second monitor.

No idea what this "cube" is.

What WOULD work with the S5? How much would it cost? Could I actually hook up a laptop and use its keyboard for the phone?

I don't think that desktop mode would work with an S5, because that phone's firmware doesn't support it AFAIK. Only thing it could do is just duplicate what's on the phone screen to a monitor or TV with MHL. It will support a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, but apps are only going to be in phone mode.

S8 etc have a specific desktop mode in their firmware, that's activated when the DeX is plugged in and powered. Same with my Huawei.
