Samsung Epic Lounge

Picked up the Samsung Epic a little over a week ago or so. My wife has the Epic and she really thought I would like it as well.

In Wisconsin, we don't have 4G. I was with Cricket and their 3G (Sprint towers) was fast until I got my speed throttled by going over 1GB.

Now I am with Sprint and my speeds are what Cricket's was throttled. I can't download Star War videos due to laggy 3G. I'm going to try connecting to Road Runner Turbo off my router and see if it makes a difference.

When my wife and I download the same application, my phone takes considerably longer. It is quite frustrating. Could an app be causing the phone to lag or do I just need to take in and get a different one?

The phone has a lot of internal storage memory and sends apps to the SD card (2.2). :) I don't download any games so I have a 385MB left of internal phone storage.

Connected to my Road Runner Turbo WiFi and I was able to load the Star Wars videos for the first time. The slow Wisconsin Sprint 3G was the problem.

Even being connected to Road Runner Turbo WiFi didn't allow me to stream Netflix with Playon. That one still remains a mystery.

My Sam's Club is selling the Epic for only $100 with two year activation.

If you and your wife have the same phone, and you are in the same place, I don't see why hers would download faster. If anything, yours should be faster because you probably have less stuff on it (since it's newer). I would exchange it for a new one. (or an Evo or Evo Shift or Nexus S 4g). I did read the Epic was getting the gingerbread update, though. Starting in Europe I think.

I'm going back to the store tonight and complain about their painfully slow 3G. Not being able to load a youtube video on an Epic is mind blowing.

I'm moving to Wisconsin in a month. Please tell me the slow 3G service isn't in the greater Milwaukee area. We've been living in the greater Okeefenokee Swamp area in Georgia and I promised my wife we would get better service in Wisconsin.

I live in Waukesha. Milwaukee and Waukesha are about 20 miles apart.

Amazing, I'm moving to Waukesha. Born and raised there.

It could be that I just have crappy phone. I'll update what happens after I visit the Sprint store.

From what I have read, 4G won't be coming to Wisconsin for quite some time. My wife and I will be flying out of O'Hare (Chicago) during the summer so that will be the first time we can try out 4G.

The tech at the Sprint store took my phone and used my Speed Test app to test my speed. She said that the speeds that I was getting looked normal for Sprint and that there was nothing wrong with the phone. I told her to play a video and compare it to the store manager's rooted Evo. While his phone lagged, mine wouldn't even play the video. They said that I must have downloaded app that was causing this. I told them that I only download apps from the Market. He then looked at my 2.2 update and said that something didn't look right. When I bought my phone, he was the one who installed the update. He asked me a few times if I had put a new ROM on the phone. I told him that I did not root the phone and any rooted apps that were purchased in the Market were from my Ascend. They tried talking me into doing a hard reset but I knew that wouldn't make a difference...plus I would have to reinstall everything again. Finally, they gave me a new Epic. The part that sucks is that I lost my screen cover with turning my old one in.

It looks like Sprint just has teribbly slow 3G in Wisconsin if his rooted Evo can't even play a video with numerous stops. :(

I must say that I'm shocked that Cricket has faster 3G than Sprint.

My two year contract (Epic) will expire in April of 2013.
Are you locked into the contact yet? If you can I would walk away now and try a different carrier. 2 years is a long time to be unhappy. It's hard to believe sprints coverage would be that slow. Does your new phone seem any faster?

No, I have a couple of weeks until I am locked in. If you visit the Epic or Sprint forum here, their are quite a few complaints about Sprint's slow 3G. The new phone is faster...about the same speed as my wife's Epic.

You guys should ask your local Guide to put a link to this thread in your phone's sticky guide thread. :)

What kind of 3g speeds are you getting now? The nexus s 4g comes out this weekend, and I've been thinking about switching, but after reading about the reduced coverage and slow 3g on the sprint forum, I'm a little worried. I'm not sure about 4g where I live. Ohio looks pretty much covered on the map, but I would have to check and make sure. My cricket is paid up until close to the end of the month, so I have time to decide. Since you went from cricket to sprint, are you happy with sprint? Any regrets? It would be a big increase in my monthly bill, plus signing the contact, so its a hard decision. I really haven't had any problems with my ascend, I'm just bored of it, and the nexus is really nice. I'm thinking I won't do it unless my area has 4g coverage. Anyway, any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

This is the results from my second Epic:

4/22-4/28 The speeds were terrible. I had a low of .05Mbps and a high of only 0.21Mbps.

5/3-5/6 The speeds have been a better. A low of 0.37Mbps and a high of 0.42Mbps.

These speeds were downloads. Sprint said I should be happy with 0.3Mbps.

When I was Cricket it was faster and I had no problems watching youtube videos. Even at Sprint's faster speeds, my Epic still struggles to not lag like a mofo. With that said, I love the Epic but do not like Sprint's lagging 3G.

I really don't make a lot of calls on my Epic. My family all has prepaid phones out in the sticks so their minutes are limited. My feedback on call reception wouldn't be very noteworthy.

When I switched, I received a 25% work discount and $120 credit for switching carriers. It really cut my bill down so with insurance my bill isn't that much more than Cricket's.
