Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 is really slow sometimes

minas1

Lurker
I have recently bought a samsung galaxy ace 2, as it was a really cheap smart phone.

My girlfriend has had this phone as well. Her's was android version 2.3.
The one that I bought had new firmware, android 4.1.2.

Sometimes my phone is really slow, it takes ages to respond, and sometimes it even restarts by itself. These things happen more frequently when I am on youtube, chrome browser and other programs like these.

The only services that I have installed are:
1) Facebook
2) Navigator (a GPS navigation program - don't know why it needs a service though)
3) Viber

The other services were already installed, and they are not many.

And this is the really strange thing:
My girlfriend has never had any kind of these problems on her 2.3 Ace 2. But when she upgraded to 4.1 as well, she told me that she feels her phone is a lot slower! This means the phone is not slow because its hardware is bad, but something is wrong with the software.

Is there generally something wrong with this firmware (4.1) on this phone? What can I do to fix it?
Would installing a custom firmware improve this situation?

Have you searched the forum? Smokey McPot posted how to fix it. I can't remember what thread it was, but it's definitely in here somewhere.

I know I'll get slated for this but Samsung stock Jelly Bean on this device is terrible. Whether it be Touchwiz (which I think plays a huge part), optimization (I also think plays a small part) or something else I have no clue but Samsung really dropped the ball on Jelly Bean for our device I believe.

However, it is not a hardware restriction. I know this because after trying many different things and still feeling slow I tried out Cyanogenmod (unofficial build) one day and the phone FLIES with it. Even faster than Gingerbread if at all possible and the phone was fast on Gingerbread! I'm currently running Android 4.3.1 on my phone thanks to Cyanogenmod 10.2 and it's amazingly fast!!

Solutions for stock Jelly Bean lag (these are not steps, but different things to try):

1. Use a custom ROM - such as modified stock which comes with performance tweaks and removed bloatware. Also usually zero bugs as it's still Samsung stock firmware. Or Cyanogenmod which gives a more minimal, vanilla Android experience with added options for theming and the possibility of running a later version of Android than Samsung has released for the device.

2. Samsung's "maintenance" suggestion - Smokey posted this elsewhere and it appears to have worked for some people who upgraded to Jelly Bean although I feel this is only partial solution.

3. Disable bloatware apps - Within app settings you are able to "disable" bloatware apps which you don't use. This may free up some resources and help performance although trying that myself in the past I didn't notice a huge improvement.

4. Use a different launcher - TouchWiz is notoriously bloated and laggy. To reduce basic homescreen/interface lag it may be worth using something like Nova Launcher instead.

5. Root your device - This will then enable you to remove bloatware entirely and use certain system tweaking apps which can sometimes add performance optimisation to the device. Proceed carefully here though in case you mess anything up.

I opted for a custom ROM and couldn't be happier since. However that root can be risky if you have zero knowhow and don't read anything properly. Not to mention the Cyanogenmod builds for our device are unofficial and can contain bugs (although 10.1 is essentially bug free now and 10.2 is getting close to being)

It's not the phone though. It's Samsung's firmware.
