Help Samsung Galaxy Ace wifi problems

Imouinda

Lurker
I've done a (hopefully!) thorough search and I haven't been able to find an answer to this problem. I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace running Gingerbread. I don't have any problems connecting to secured wifi, (my home network, work, friends' homes, etc), but I have difficulty with open, public networks like McDonald's. My phone finds the wireless signal, which is generally very strong, and connects, but is unable to get me to the login page, so I can't access the internet and apps like Gmail and Facebook don't work. Some open networks work and some don't and I have no idea why and I can't see a pattern. This afternoon, my phone couldn't use the internet at McDonald's while my father's iphone 4 connected to the free wifi perfectly. I'll be travelling internationally soon and the free wifi would make a huge difference! Thank you!

I've not used public wifi in an age. Do you have to connect to the network, then open a login page via the browser, or does it ask for credentials when you connect to the network via settings?

Yeah, after I click on the available network, I click to open my web browser (Chrome), and then (if I'm lucky and it works!) an authentication login page pops up. For free public wifi, all I have to do is agree to their terms and then everything works. My problem is that sometimes my browser can't open the login page, and can't recognize the connection.
Please help!

I have had the same issue with mine and it was driving me crazy!!

The only way I found to get it to work was to download the BT wifi app (you have to be an existing BT broardband customer) which would then log me into a free wifi hotspot automatically.

Not sure if this will help you but it worked for me.

you have to be aware that sometimes to connect to free public wifi networks you need login or password. usually you have to ask for it at the service counter, if any.
When your browser does not give you the login page, you must check if you have the WiFi connected without error and has acquired network (settings> etc ...)
