Help Samsung galaxy broken?

I recently got a samsung galaxy s and it has been working perfectly.

I left it on charge for a short period of time (5 hours) and didn't look at it until after those 5 hours.

When I came back, the screen was covered in horizontal lines and colour flecks.
The back button and the menu button are both lit up, but the phone will not turn on or off and I can not get it to respond.

Is it broken or is their something I am missing?
Does anything happen if you overcharge it?

Please help urgently.

I've never heard of this happening, but over charging it should do nothing. All the phones pretty much have an auto-cut off switch when the battery is full. Has nothing to do with charging the battery too long. Either

a) Factory reset to see if this solves the issue
b) Use Odin to re-flash the firmware for your phone on (this fixed a camera issue I had a long time ago)
c) return it for a new one.
