Samsung Galaxy Light Video Review

This is my last post of a review tonight(I'm introducing myself with some reviews I've done).
This ones for what has to be one of the biggest "sleeper phones" currently out, the Samsung Galaxy Light. I honestly don't have a bad thing to say about it, it's about as nice a phone as your gonna get for the paltry price of $150.00 OWNED. Check the review out and ask any and all questions, I'll answer to the best of my ability :)

Samsung Galaxy Light 4G LTE SGH-T399 for T-Mobile - YouTube

Here's where you root it(thanks, ShabbyPenguin!!):

It has come to my attention that the links in my post above wont be available until I've posted some more, sorry for the mix up, they will become available soon enough :)

I just got this phone, and watched your review. I mostly agree with what you've said; it's without a doubt an excellent phone at incredible value.

Regarding comparing it to the S3 though, the comparison isn't quite fair. Every benchmark I've seen (including my own) show it trailing it only slightly behind the S3, but the S3 is certainly a more powerful phone. It takes less oomph to push a lower definition screen, which is why the Galaxy Light can still keep up with the S3. Conversely, the S3 outperforms the Light, and does so pushing a 1280x720 screen.

In the end though, it really doesn't matter. The Galaxy Light is smooth and fast and has power to spare. And that's the key point; most phones in this price range have terrible processors, less RAM, and lag and jump and are just a PITA to use. But the Galaxy Light is a frustration-free delight to use. I've completely skinned mine with Nova launcher with a bunch of widgets, and it runs like a dream.

My previous phone had a 4.3" 960x540 AMOLED screen, and I can't really tell any difference in quality - if anything, this screen is brighter and with better color rendition. The smaller screen is a bit of a pain if I want to play a game, and obviously it's not the best for watching videos/movies (it looks nice, but it's small), but that's one sacrifice you'd have to make when considering this phone. And, again, at this price point, you can't do much better, while you can certainly do much worse.

Obviously, at this price point, you'll never get everything you want. There's no HDMI-out capability, nor do you get USB-OTG. And one thing I'd really like to have, which wouldn't have bumped the price all that much, is an LED notification light.

The only other real complaint I have about this phone isn't about the phone itself, but the lack of accessories for it. There's only a few cases available for it, and I have no idea what battery it uses so I can buy a spare (googling the part # turns up diddly). This phone should be a lot more popular than it is. The Moto G is getting all the low-price glory right now, and certainly deservedly so in many regards, but I get literally several times the DL/UP speeds with the Galaxy Light than I would with the Moto G.

I would like to point out that while the phone is intermittently available on HSN or QVC for $150, after shipping and taxes, the total price ends up being more like $172. You can find them on eBay for $170, and with faster shipping. I bought mine used for $120 shipped (ordered Tuesday, got it Thursday), and it's in immaculate condition. It's in my plans to eventually get a "real" phone, but in the meantime this Galaxy Light is an amazing device. And even after I get that "real" phone (which will undoubtedly be comparatively huge), it'll be nice to have the G-Light on hand as a back-up or for when I don't want to carry a waffle in my pocket.

Great review, I agree with all of it :)
I actually got the Light as a back up to my S4, but was amazed by what it offered and could do for such a low price. And that's the thing as you mentioned, for the price it's really got no competition. The Moto G is a fine phone, but it's limitations(non replaceable battery, non expandable memory, stuck at 3G)are a serious trade off for that low price. The Galaxy has none of those trade offs, except perhaps the smaller screen, but as you also mentioned, and I agree with you totally with, the screen it does have is great. It's an above average standard definition 4" gem.
This phone deserves more love, and I hope it get's it, it's a great effort by Samsung that is all but unknown.
Oh, and as for cases and chargers, I found quite a few on ebay and I found a really great case from a place called Beyond Cell, I linked to all of them in the review on youtube. Batteries are non existent, even Samsung isn't selling one, do report back if you do find one, thanks :)

Picked one up used for $95. Can't wait to get it Monday. Currently using Optimus F3, which I love, but due to little space and being a bit slow, decided to give Light a shot. I doubt I keep it, since F3 is so much lighter and smaller, plus has bigger battery. Wish there were more LTE phones with 4" screen. This is ridiculous, having only two phones to choose from???

BTW, if someone is looking, eBay has a seller with a huge stock of them for $120 shipped.

Be prepared to be blown away at how much better the Light is than the F3...it's better across the board, no joke. My friends got an F3 and changed it for the Light as well, and he's happier than can be for doing it. It really has no competition in it's price class.

Just saw your YouTube review and pretty much sold. However, I tried to replicate most of your steps in the review and the F3 performed them pretty well. Since I'm a freak when it comes to phone size, I really hope the extra weight and size worth it. Do you know if any updates in the works to KK 4.4? I heard that F3 will be getting it at some point.

I'm surprised there are only a couple of threads for this phone.

I'm sure it will be, it's not at all heavy, not even a little bit. This phone hasn't gotten much love anywhere, unfortunately, I'm hoping that changes soon. At least the accessories are coming for it, from good cases to chargers, that wasn't the case for way too long. It should also be dropping in price more as time passes as well, so it should get a bit more popular then, one can hope.

As for KitKat, it's been confirmed by Samsung it will be getting it...when that is, of course, is up to them, but it shouldn't be too long :)

I thought about going with the F3 because of it's much larger battery plus it's slightly cheaper, but the minimal internal storage and weaker processor were the deal killers for me. Plus, reviews I read said unflattering things about the camera. Not that I expect the GL to be a powerhouse picture-taker, but the few pics I've taken look pretty good (useable enough for Facebook, anyway).

given lg's track record for even updating their flagship phones i wouldnt hold your breathe. samsung may take 6 months to push the update to us, but it will at least come.

The memory issue obviously has a workaround, not sure for how long, since even with the Link2SD, it still gets low from time to time. I also haven't noticed any issues with the camera. They all suck in low light situation and work very well outdoors, which is the case with F3. I've used it to list items on ebay and got better result than our Canon camera.

One thing I've noticed with F3 is the voice quality. It's pretty much horrendous. Not that I spend much time talking on the phone, but even a quick call with the wife (she has F3 as well) or the parents is much worse than when we had analog phones.

Anyone knows how to root this thing? My trusted Kingo Root fails.

Very easy. Make sure you install Kies first and plug your phone in to make sure all the drivers are working properly.

Note that this replaces the stock kernel with a custom one, so when the update to 4.4 Kitkat comes, the normal update methods (OTA, Kies) won't work, although there will likely be a work-around for that. I don't know if the root process is reversible or not. Since it uses a rooted kernel, doing a factory reset doesn't kill the root since the kernel remains.

Do understand that this will kill the official KitKat update, something you said you wanted, just repeating this as it needed to be done. Make sure you really want this.
