I am thinking about getting one of these for my 10 y.o. daughter for Christmas. Does anyone have any experience with them and have an opinion? We have Android experience (Optimus M and a SGT 10.1) so we want to stay Android. We cannot go to the Kindle Fire for her because her older sister is getting that and we want to get something different. All the other non-phone Androids like this seem really bad.

Yes. They are very fast compared to the iPod touch 4th gen. They have very good cameras as well. The sound quality fom they speakers are amazing with speakers being louder even than an iPad 2. It runs very fast and smooth faster and matey smoother than an iPod touch. It's Bluetooth 3.0 is very fast with twice the ram of an iPod touch so multitasking and pretty much every task is sooth an fluid. The font facing camera works well for sell portraits and video chat over qik and skype the battery life is longer than that of an iPod touch with th battery easily removable to replace (if necessary). As for games you be surprised at the options available for it with the android market. Because of the 512mb, ram 1ghz hummingbird processor, power vr sgx540 gpu, a it's screen it won't be outdated for. Very long time.

Thank you! I thought of one other thing. Does it have a compass sensor? I cannot find out if it does, but with a GPS sensor I would expect that a compass would also be included. Her favorite app is the sky viewer and it is needed for that.

Yes it has a digital compass. You can download and play Nintendo game boy/ console games with n64oid and gbaoid...

To keep kids innocently browsing for apps from running across things like "sensual massagers", which bring up all sort of unnecessary and uncomfortable questions, you may want to set up the Android Market's content filters.

When you have the Android Market app running, use the settings button next to home to get at the content filtering options, among others. Also, you can set up a PIN to control who can alter those content filter settings.

You may also want to look into getting an antivirus program installed.

Your child is going to love the Galaxy Player, but, as with all internet-enabled devices, parents are required to do a little homework to create boundaries consistent with their family's values.

Good luck!
