Help Samsung Galaxy S - Indian thread

I am using XXJPM without any lagfix....it's good....all apps, activities list of launcher pro, gallery...all these are loading much faster than before. Though I switched to froyo for mp4 video format....but now feeling it's much faster...*for me* :)

I wanted to know one thing; Can i flash my ROM with the stock Froyo by android? Coz I hunted XDA and found all the tweaked versions by various mods. I kinda get scared to use them coz they obv might not be as stable as Google themselves have made it. I'd be grateful if anyone could gimmi a link to a stock froyo which will work for SGS OR a froyo which has significant speed increase.

Hi Kalpik. I successfully flashed Voodoo Doctor version 1.3. However, I can't get EDGE connection on Airtel

My previous settings are:
name: Mobile Office
apm: airtelgprs.com
mcc: 404
mnc: 45
authentication type;none
apn type: internet

This does not work anymore. Any idea on how to get the edge connection back?

The official Froyo for SGS will be released by Samsung, not Google, since every manufacturer makes their own modifications on top of the stock Google version.
Taking that into account, I dont understand why people are waiting so eagerly for the official froyo release in India? It is a well known and accepted fact that Samsung severely lacks expertise in the firmware segment ,so expecting amazing results from the official froyo version will lead to nothing but a huge heartbreak.

On the other hand, the SGS is still an awesome piece of hardware, and those who really want to exploit its awesomeness have to do the extra work of reading up a LOT on the good advice/instructions/tips/feedback at the xda-dev forums.

It gets confusing, it requires some daring, it needs some dedicated time but at the end of the day if you can follow instructions clearly there is a lot you can do with this phone, official froyo or not!

so where should I go for these instructions? If all I need to put in is time and dedication thats fine. But keep in mind I'm not a tech guy lol...I dunno jack about tech to the extent that I am scared to root my phone incase it bricks' lol....the XDA forums are good to go?

Oops, my mistake. I switched the name and apn. BTW, your custom ROM is great! Thank you.

xda forums is the place where you want to go. Make sure you read this first [WARNING!] Do Not flash Any ROM until you can get the 3 buttons DOWNLOAD MODE working - xda-developers It is very important. If download mode doesn't work, return your SGS and ask for a new one.

I believe it is very hard to brick your SGS. I've flashed numerous times and I haven't got into any problem yet :D

One more thing, rooting and flashing new roms are extremely easy, unlike HTC and motorola.

I am eager for the official froyo release because that will allow the devs to release better ROMs. Right now most of the ROMs are still based on the beta version of Froyo, so there might be some bugs hidden in there.

Thanks a lot for your review. I've already gone through those pages and flashed my ROM with custom made Froyo by devs on XDA. Also did the latest JG4 thru Odin since my kies won't work.

But somehow I felt after reading the reviews of custom made OS to be just 'OK'... they weren't amazing. And thats why I was wondering whether there is any 'unmodified' version of Froyo available for Galaxy S. Coz sometimes I feel, tht OS is a big deal and relying on a small team of devs for a comprehensive and long time benefiting OS (coz m bored of backing up data and restoring it) is not so right.

The small team of devs out there at xda dev have been struggling to improve upon the deficiencies present in the stock firmwares and if you ask me, they've done a much better job than samsung themselves! Yes, you're right, OS is a big deal but have patience, there are good brains at work in those forums.

That is a valid point I agree. But just as you implied, the release of the official froyo will just be a starting point for further improvements. My earlier post was referring mostly to posts which were expecting something magical just with the launch of the official froyo.
 
Guys I wanted to purchase a screen guard from GadgetSheildz but their site is providing the option to ship in India.... Is there any other way to purchase it or shud I settle for some other screen guard...

Here is how the chat looks

Instead of

I had reset my phone to factory default , still the problem persist.

umm.. Go to settings, go to date and time, set date and time to manual and select your zone. If the time is wrong set it up again. Check the date as well,the am pm factor too. Now log off and log in again, your prob would be solved.
its a matter of time stamping. If even this doesn't help then set your time 3 mins back the standard time.

Could you please tell me what is XXJPM and what do you mean by switched back to froyo?

Isn't JPM a type of ROM for froyo itself?

I'm new to all this, please explain it to me, thanks. :)
 
Today, the JG4 update really disappointed me. It took more than 3 mins while I was in my car driving but still couldn't locate me on the maps. So sad!

XXJPM is the latest froyo ROM for galaxy s as uploaded to www.samfirmware.com. I didn't say switched *back*....I was using eclair (android 2.1)...and switched to froyo (android 2.2) to get the mp4 video recording.
JPM is working good for me :)

Omg.. are you using the one released by samsung which they pulled off for some reasons? I heard that it has problems like sudden phone vibrations and stuff?
is it working perfect for you? If it is, could you provide a link for dl and steps in short please?

samfirmware has some prob. Everytime i try to open the firmwares>S series, it says "Oops.. couldn't load, etc etc..."... you ppl getting the same prob?

Its showing an update for me as well... But its the same update DDJG4 I dont understand y this is coming n asking me to update to this..

I hope someone will let me knw abt this update...

Guys today i installed Doc-Kalpik's Froyo JP6 V5.1 full. Its just awesome without even lagfix.
i have installed 132 apps and its still smooth. its a must try.
