Help Samsung Galaxy S - Indian thread

I remembered using voodoo when I was on eclair. The colour changes on 100% brightness. I suppose after upgrading to froyo/custom ROM, just flash the voodoo kernel to get all of the voodoo goodness.

Could you please tell me what you meant by flashing the voodoo kernel. (Did u mean downloading the preview 5 .zip file renaming to update.zip and then in recovery, applying it?)

I haven't installed google voice/vlingo right now. So I cannot tell you now. Perhaps other users reading this thread can enlighten us.

I am not talking about google voice (it is another separate app), but voice search, which comes as a system app in all the Galaxy S froyo firmwares AFAIK. (And in Doc's ROM)

Yeah, I'd love to know whether the voice search is working properly for others.

You can request to have english(india) to be included in the custom rom to the maker in the appropriate thread in xda.

I doubt, whether English(India) support needs to be specifially added. (Considering that even the US phone, T-Mobile G2 has the support, I guess it comes by default with Froyo.)

Only question is ,are all Galaxy S handsets having a bug, related to voice search in English(India) or is it just me ?

I remembered Doc's recommendation to flash while the battery is full.
1. Drain & Recharge till full (may not be needed, not sure)
2. Boot into recovery > advanced CWM features > Wipe Battery Stats

Thanks, I'll look into it :).

That's right. You do not have to rename it update.zip. Just select the zip of your choosing in CWM.

Yes, I meant voice search. Sorry ;)

Ok, thanks. But, am hesitant in flashing, as it is still in an alpha stage. Would definitely check it out when a stable release has been done..

Go to Settings -> Sound -> Vibrate and select "never"... this should bring up the true silent mode...

In Android 2.1, I could easily switch to true silent mode by pressing power button for some time and I could use the notification bar to have vibrate mode. Here in Froyo, I have to go to Settings etc. as written above...too painful. Switch of profiles should be easier than that. Otherwise, I love Froyo. My first impressions are as follows:

1. All apps and settings remain intact after upgrade...
2. Text selection and copying is much easier and intuitive.
3. I love that mouse kind of thing where you can actually move the cursor.
4. Voice search is good for standard Enlish words but it fails miserably when you try to search Indian locations in Google Maps. It gets totally confused. I thought it would recognise locations stored in Goodle Maps datacase.
5. Flash experience is fantastic.
6. It has taken care of that problem about updating an existing contact.
7. Some applications used to get launched all by themselves in Android 2.1. Here it does not happen.

Try going to settings->voice input and output->voice recognition settings-> language
and select English(India)..

You'll likely find it to be much more accurate. (works very well for me..)

But, for me, when switching to English(India), it no longer recongnizes my speech as voice command. (For eg, directions to delhi, would do a google search "directions to delhi, instead of actually showing the directions)..

Can you please check and tell me, how is it for you?

After upgrading to froyo, I noticed that I have only these voice actions in the help menu:

(1) navigate to
(2) directions to
(3) map of
(4) call

The other voice actions like "note to self", "send text" are missing. Is anyone else seeing this? I'm using DDJP6.

Saying "directions to india" works but not "directions to delhi". No difference between both english(canada) and english(india).

Both "note to self" and "send text" are working for me. They are missing from help menu but it works when I talk to the phone. I am using the kernel from insanity rom.

@caesey,
Have you tried changing the language to English(India) and is it still working for you ..
Also , what is firmware is ur phone running?

Note to self and send text and other voice actions are working in other languages(I haven't tried all the commands though).

Thx for the tip. It seems all voice actions are activated with English (US) only. The accuracy leaves a lot to be desired though.

Are you sure about that?
For me, it is working in every damn language (including English-Canada, English-SA, English-NZ etc..) except English (India)..

so annoying .. :(

I am sure ,this must be a simple fix..(come on, just making the search app, recognise the "navigate to"as one command..which it does for every other variation :( )

has anybody faced issue setting up the exchange account. After updating to Official froyo. I am facing issue. My inbox is not getting sync. All emails are not downloaded yet. Calender is in sync though.

:mad:i am facing same issue... all APN settings have disappeared... can anyone help with vodaphone mobile connect settings

can you suggest some apps to backup contacts, SMS & other app data? I haven't rooted my phone yet.

for contacts : when you CREATE new contact , make sure its Google Contact so that it automatically sync with contacts in Gmail.
This way if you create a contact in Phone (set as google contact) then same will be seen in Contacts section of Gmail.
If you edit same on say gmail, same will be reflected on phone.

If you reset phone for some reason , you can sync and get all contacts back.

for sms backup to Gmail : Use SMS+ Backup. this allows you to sync and restore SMS from phone to gmail. If you reset phone for some reason , you can sync and get all SMS on phone again.

Hope this helps

As I wrote above in my edited text, I downloaded Brut Mod Google Maps from XDA Developers (Brut Google Maps 4.6.0.4686-brut17). It doesn't get installed on my phone. It shows the file as being installed but finally it ends with a message that app cannot be installed.

Select the app. Click on purchase. Fill in the credit card details and its done.

If you dont like a app you can get a refund within 24 hours. After 24 hours no refund can be claimed.

The Purchased apps are linked to your "google account" instead of phone. So if you format your phone but keep the same google account next time there is no need to purchase the apps again.

Some very strange things happening with me ...

1. Kies do not recognize the FROYO update for my phone. It says the update available, but says the current firmware cannot be upgraded...

2. I downloaded JP6, and tried with ODIN ..ODIN recognizes my phone, the moment i press "START", ODIN crashes ... Please Help ...

I need FROYO desperately ... Someone please help ...

I loved Galaxy S because Youtube was incredibly fast on Android 2.1 version. When Edge speed was slow, it used to adjust the video quality accordingly to start playing the video within less than 5 seconds. After upgrading to Froyo, it takes hell of a long time to load. I have even upgraded Youtube to the latest version. That too doesn't help. Is there any streaming setting that I am missing? Please help.

You tried installing the renamed-retagged version right?
I didn't want two maps application, so being rooted, I removed the stock Google Maps (via Titanium Backup because it is a system app), and then downloaded the latest Google Maps from market, uninstalled it.(because, it no longer is a system app)..

Then , installed the Brut Mod Google Maps (the first one, not the renamed or retagged one)..Working very well for me now :)

If your phone is rooted, you could try that ?

Regarding your other query, I haven't played much with the stock youtube. (I use it only when having Wi-Fi around, so need to have HQ quality while viewing.) But, I know for sure that TubeMate (which also allows downloading videos in the resolution you want), has the option to stream HQ or Non-HQ versions of the video..

Hope , it proves useful for you :)

1. Do I need to necessarily root my phone to install this app? I am quite afraid of making any OS level changes.

2. Can I not have this Brut Mod Google Maps in addition to the default Google Maps coming with the system? Having only one App probably requires Rooting and Titanium Backup, as you have said?

3. Please give me exact link to the Brut Mod Maps. File name downloaded by me is maps4.6.0.4686-brut.apk.

4. Regarding Youtube, I wish to clarify that the Eclair version on Galaxy S probably had some kind of dynamic adjustment of bandwidth (whereas now, it is HQ or non-HQ only). Earlier, when I used to play Youtube while walking on the road, it used to be a low resolution video but when I reached home and played same video in Wi-Fi, it was automatically HQ. What I am trying to claim is that the video used to have some kind of dynamic and automatic sensing of bandwidth available and it used to adjust resolution accordingly to play back video almost instantaneously with Edge connection also.
