rooted? As a contract phone from any provider? I doubt that. Where did you read that? Buying direct like the N1 sure but from the provider I'd be very surprised if they leave it open.
 
And while we're at it, I'll be waiting until the real thing happens and we get to see what it really is and what the gotchas are. The Sony X10 was supposed to be a 'great phone' but I wasn't impressed enough. Rooted and running a real ROM might be better but for now the Sony+R mix isn't appealing compared to the little Magic running Froyo.

All 4 versions of the Samsung S have been rooted.. there are lots of sources to confirm this. Samsung has made these phone very easy to root. And I have to say the X10 is a great phone I had it for 4 months and loved it and there are 1000s of people that would say the same thing.. I had a Magic and the X10 was leaps and bounds more of a phone.

I read your message as it comes already rooted, my mistake. Of course it is rootable, wouldn't have it any other way. If there are good froyo choices I might take a look but for now I can't buy it anyway.

And that's the problem with the X10, rootable but when I last looked there were more rom choices on the magic. I didn't see enough in the X10 to warrant the price but when they are are available for cheap like the magic is (on the open market, not from the providers) I might look harder. Bigger screen and faster isn't enough, my Magic is nearly as good for most things and costs a lot less. As shipped I didn't like it enough to pay that much more and no way will I lock in for 3 years.

The Sammy might be a great phone but spec and hype alone isn't enough.
 
If Bell has the vibrant and telus seems to be about to announce the Apollo, what are people's preference between the others?

Personally, I like the original galaxy s. I'm so comfortable with swype these days that the keyboard on the epic seems pointless and I think the captivate is hideous.

^Umm technically they're all Galaxy S phones (minus the Apollo, i think)

And we'll probably be getting the captivate as Rogers uses the same frequency as AT&t, But I would much rather have the epic 4G, I love me some physical QWERTY keyboards :)

Sorry, I thought the apollo had a hummingbird and the same screen as the others... I guess not..
The original galaxy s I refer to is the original i9000 version released before all of the other versions.
The big three all use the same GSM tech now for their hspa networks so I don't understand why people keep pairing rogers and AT&T. The vibrant that bell is releasing will be a GSM version so there's no reason to think that Rogers has to go with the captivate just because that's what AT&T has.
 
Well the thing is T-Mobile uses a different frequency for their HSPA+ network.... and some phones are custom made to only receive T-Mobiles HSPA+ frequency (Like my T-Mobile G1) so with the captivate, its less work because AT&T uses the same frequency as Rogers, so all that is needed is to lock it to rogers, and add in the rogers apps. But then again the frequency's can always be changed (Like when the G1 came to rogers as the dream) so yes, there still is a chance it can be one of the other models but its just easier to use the captivate.

And most phones that AT&T have released, sometime later Rogers releases them as well.

But rogers, bell, telus and at&t all share the 800/1900 3g bands. So its not safe to assume the the at&t version is going to rogers.
 
Well its official Rogers has said the Samsung S will be coming soon.. only after it was leak over a week ago from Samsung and it looks to be the captivate.

Looks like I will be upgrading soon.
 
Oh that looks gorgeous....now if only I had hundreds of dollars to spend on one....
 
So, the Bell Vibrant has the second front-facing camera and the Rogers Captivate does not. Is this a big enough deal for people? Personally (on a Rogers contract) I am a bit jealous of the front camera.
 
I'm jealous of the camera and I'm jealous of the track pad. I know you don't use it too often but when you need it it's really handy. That said, I'm in Manitoba so Rogers is the only game in town if I want one of these subsidized.
 
I don't often use the cameras. I can see the usefulness of the front facing one though. It certainly isn't a huge deal for me so I can't say I'd flip (if given the option) to Bell for the front facing camera.

If Bell promised faster updates though....;)
 
well there still is a possibility that the Rogers version of the captivate will have a front facing camera, the Galaxy Vibrant on T-mobile lacked a front facing camera and when it went to bell it had one, so there is still hope!

Also I have a question, if I bought the Vibrant from bell would I be able to use the same 3G frequency as rogers does?
 
I may be mistaken, but I think even if you get the front camera, it will be useless if Rogers does not support it.
 
Keep in mind there are a number of different "Samsung Galaxy S" phones out there. As I understand it the Vibrant, which is what Bell is offering, is the one with the front facing camera (which I can confirm, I just saw one yesterday at a kiosk in the mall). From what I've heard, the Captivate, which is the one that it seems Rogers will be getting, does NOT have the front facing camera.

And, yeah, unless Rogers supports video calling (not friggin' likely), that front facing camera will be useless as anything more than a second camera.

Having said all that, I played around with the demo model at the mall (I know, hardly a representative choice, but it's likely the only one I *will* get to play with! ;) )... this is an all over amazing phone. Easily the first Android I've played with that's actually offered a user experience as clean and crisp as the iPhone. In fact, I had to double-check that I wasn't somehow playing with an iPhone. This appears to be a truly incredible phone, I would love to have one for myself... well, if it had a hardware keyboard anyway.

Ummm why exactly would we need Rogers to support it? All you need is an app that does video calling, like Skype or Fring. As long as the app itself is not blocked from the network, it has nothing to do with Rogers.

I have Cogeco intenet service, and when I use Skype it has nothing to do with Cogeco.
 
Well, for instance, we know that Rogers has specially-made roms for its phones (look at the HTC 2.1 update), so it's not impossible that the ROM won't have any driver for the front camera if it's not supposed to be used.

However, all that is pure speculation until Rogers announces the phone. Until then, we're not even sure there WILL be a Samsung Galaxy S in Rogers stores.
 
Good to know!

I'll be the first to cheer if Rogers has the Galaxy S with a front camera, and supports video calling.

However, the iPhone is a different thing altogether. Unless you jailbreak your phone, the front facing calling feature works only with Wi-Fi.

Now, Rogers, announce the phone already!
 
Alright. It's official now.

I have signed up for the updates. I am due for a HUP, so I'll be waiting for the Samsung.
