Help Samsung Galaxy S2 connecting to PC problem

I took some photos this weekend on my Samsung Galaxy S2 and want to transfer them to my PC. Usually I would just connect the usb lead and then drag and drop the photos.
However, now when I connect the lead the phone display changes to "Synchronising" and I can't do anything. The display stays like that forever.
I have got auto sync turned off in my settings, and am not sure what to do.
I would be grateful for any advice,please.
