Help Samsung Galaxy S3 carrier signal bouncing up & down. [UK: o2]

Is this an issue with the Galaxy S3?

On o2 we get a poor signal at home as it is, but there are certain spots at home where if i put my phone (iPhone 4S, previously 3GS) i can get a 2-3 bar signal.
My wife had a 3GS also but moved to a Galaxy S3. At the spots i'm getting 2-3 bars, she's getting about 1 maximum. Most of the time that little triangle for the signal is blank, but there isn't (repeat: isn't) the circle with the line through it.

So she seems to be getting worse than me slightly at home.

Then when out today she was using it & said it was bouncing between 1-2 bars & 3-4 bars all in the same location.

Is this an issue with the Galaxy S3? I've got until the weekend to decide whether i want to ditch my 4S & switch for an S3, but i don't want to be switching if it has known signal issues.

I should add that number of bars isn't necessarily an indicator of relative reception. There is no universal agreed calibration for the signal bars, and more than one manufacturer (including Apple) has "fixed" perceived problems just by adjusting how their signal bars are calibrated. So you can't necessarily say that 3 bars on one phone means it has better signal than 1-2 bars on another. The real test is whether calls can be made/received and maintained in fringe areas.

However, a lot of fluctuation while in one spot sounds a bit unusual, so let's see what S3 owners have to say :)
 
Thanks for that. I totally forgot about the signal issue with the iPhone. I remember when i bought my 3GS that they released an update regarding the signal.

The missus doesn't help as when i ask if she's had signal drop, she says no, but then when discussing it tonight she said she tried to get online on her phone where her iPhone never had a problem & at times she was unable to get online (with her S3).
 
I moved from Nokia N8 to Samsung S3 and found signal worse in every location. Checking various forums I found out that it seems to be a general problem with Samsung aerials. Using the free version of Fresh Network app (via Play Store) I found that I could boost my signal strength.
 
I wonder how much of this signal talk is about the bars (as was what sparked my concern) & how much is actually about the signal quality (as in being unable to text/call/browse) - as "signal strength problem" could be 1 person talking about bars but another talking about being unable to send a text.

I wonder if there's anything on the rooting scene to better solve this?
 
Yeah, I'd say my signal bounces. I'm on Verizon in the USA.

actually, the signal is generally terrible at home, and it kills my battery really quickly. I don't think my Droid X did this.
