Samsung Galaxy S3: Unlock for Free-Which one is Better?

They are basically the same procedure. The manual way came first and then the app was written to do the same process so it's go for the app as its easier. The method doesn't work on firmware released past the end of July though. Because of this the app is no longer in the play store so had to be downloaded from supercurio's website

unlocking is the frequency the phone uses to connect to the carrier.
I have an international version of SGS3 and it's unlocked because I live in North America.

Unlocking a phone simply means it can be used with a SIM card from a different carrier. I don't believe it has anything to do with the frequency, as those are built-in to the phone hardware.

Unlocking is not the same as rooting, which allows access to system files. You can unlock without rooting or root without unlocking, they are entirely different.
