Help Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop reboot loop

Robin Fosse

Newbie
Hello,

I apologize if there is already a thread on this topic. I tried searching but found nothing..
I hope I'm not the only one with this issue.

Anyway, I installed Android 5 yesterday and it seemed to work fine.
However during sync with google account I entered a boot loop.
Every 10-15 seconds it reboots. Tried wiping cache and factory reset, but the same every time.
Contacted Samsung and they told me to bring it in for repairs. This is gonna take a couple of weeks at least so a no-go for me. After googling a bit I found no one with the same issues.
The only solution was to downgrade to 4.4.2 (This is not recommended by Samsung and voids the warranty, according to the support guy i spoke to... ??)

Has anyone else experienced this issue and got a fix for it?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Robin Fosse! :)

With 84 different firmware releases, so far, for the S5 on Lollipop, you have the dubious pleasure of being the first on here, to have encountered an update problem.

Can I ask, do you remember how full your internal memory was prior to the update and whether you had moved any apps to your external SD card?

The reason for asking is outlined in #1.2 and #2.4 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

Thanks for replying so quickly :)
I had enough space on the internal memory to install it. I had however some apps on the SD card.
I'll see if I can get the courage to try updating it once more after reading your guide! Thanks a bunch :)

A long shot...

Try removing your SD card and re-booting and see if the automatic re-boots continue.

I tried that, it did not work... But maybe it there were some apps on the SD card which already caused the problems?
If I do try updating again, I'll remove SD card before i start the update.

I used Kies 3.2.15013_17 and tried updating to Android 5.0

Certainly safer than OTA. Before re-flashing your firmware, can you boot into Safe Mode, #1.4 of the previously mentioned guide, and see if you still get boot loops. This is a useful way of determining whether it is the firmware or a user's apps that are causing the problem.

Will try that once i get the courage to try again!

Thank you so much for helping me, mate! Much appreciated!
Is the 5.0 update the latest available btw?

Safe Mode is very, very, easy to do and can narrow the field down for you.

Android 5.0 is indeed, the latest stock Samsung platform for unrooted users. Having said that, there are multiple build versions being released. See, S5 Lollipop (Android 5) latest releases + screenshots, depending on your model and CSC code. See, #1.2 and #1.8 of 35 Galaxy S5 models - know yours??? to check yours.

I think you should take it to samsung or ti the shop you bought it from. They will just put their firmware on your device and replace it when that won't help. You should ask for replacement device for the time they work on yours.

I'll give it one more go before I take it back. :)

Hi guys!

I had the exact same issue of boot loop but at the moment I found what was causing the issue.

At first, I updated my Galaxy S5 from KitKat without doing any factory reset and the phone became very unstable, as it was before updated from JB to KitKat. So Cache Wipe and Factory reset were necessary.

I was very happy with the Lollipop update since I went to my sister's and wanted to pair her Wifi with my Galaxy S5 using WPS button....at this point the phone went nut and was rebooting loop again and again, the only way to stop this to happen was the factory reset as the security mode was useless as the phone continues to reboot...

My first pairing with my home wifi was done by WPS button too at phone installation, I did several test after phone installation with WPS button and Password pairing... I think the issue is caused by WPS button pairing.

Frankly I did not want to try again with any Wifi nor with WPS or Password... I am too scared to have to re-install all over again.

Something I found out is that when you pair with WPS button multiple wifi network at phone installation process, the issue does not occur... only after the installation was completed.

I have also tried not to import Google or Samsung backed up setting and cache wipe to prevent old settings to create bad behaviour.

This is only my experience and I wanted to share to make sure I am not the only one...

Hope it can help.

InKo

So, I tried again, this time OTA since my phone got the update.
I made sure all the apps were on the internal memory and I removed the sd card.
The same f-ing shite happened. Tried to boot into safe mode and it wouldnt stay on... :(

Guess there's just one more solution.. Take it back to the shop, and not have it for three weeks.

FYI, I got it running on 5.0 now. Using the version in your second post in this thread:
http://androidforums.com/threads/s5-lollipop-android-5-latest-releases-screenshots.888974/
And doing a factory reset after it finished installation. The first time it booted up it was stuck in reboot loop, and safe mode gave the same error.
However, this time I did not initially sync my apps with google during setup but synced it lat a later stage, so it didn't download any of my previous apps. This must be the issue.
Thanks for your replies and help :)

Edit:
This left me with a Polish version which had some preinstalled Polish apps.
That won't do, so I'll try the same with the previous FW version i downloaded.

Think I got it from sammobile.com, but can't remember which version it was

Well done Robin Fosse! :D

As is often the case it would, as you have discovered, appear to be the user apps and settings that were causing the problem and your clean install approach seems to have resolved the issue.

Ic... but there is another one which I tried previously,
"G900FXXU1BNL9_G900FNEE1BNL2_G900FXXU1BNL9_HOME.tar.md5"
Is this the same region version just a tad older?

Edit:
I'm confused now...

I've got 2 fw downloaded:
G900FXXU1BNL9_G900FXEO1BNL1_G900FXXU1BNL9_HOME.tar.md5
G900FXXU1BNL9_G900FNEE1BNL2_G900FXXU1BNL9_HOME.tar.md5
How can I tell which is the newest and which I got installed on my phone?

Cheers for taking the time and answering my question, which I'm sure I could google to get.

Edit2:
I think I just got it :)

"G900FXXU1BNL9_G900FXEO1BNL1_G900FXXU1BNL9_HOME.tar.md5"
This is the Polish FW I got installed and is not the latest

"G900FXXU1BNL9_G900FNEE1BNL2_G900FXXU1BNL9_HOME.tar.md5"
This is the one you mentioned earlier as the latest for Nordic countries.

So then I'm gonna flash this version unless you tell me otherwise :)

Hi!
I am new in this forum and I wanto to say hello to everybody!
First of all sorry for my english that may be poor and incorrect...
This morming I updated my Samsung Galaxy S5 with Lollipop via OTA (FW name is G900FXXU1BNL9 and my carrier is H3G Italia). After the update the smartphone continuosly reboot without any option to keep it powered up, so I cannot do anything!
The phone is unusable!
Seems that what happened to Robin Fosse happend also to me now, so Robin you are not alone... (!)
And there is a mistake by me :( . My last backup is done 3 month ago... so I want to try to re take my phone in life without make a hard reset loosing many data...
So I tried to load Lollipop with Odin 3.10 but nothing change.
Now I want to try to flash the original firmware (G900FXXU1ANG2) with Odin... is this a good idea? The phone is quite new and it's still under warranty...
I tried to follow this conversation with al the posts of Robin Fosse and ironass but I don't know very well what they are talking about, so I am in doubt... please help me!
Or somebody here may help me in other way, with some other suggestions?
In fact I need much more my fully functional S5 than a smartphone with Android 5.0...
