Help Samsung Galaxy S5 Mobile data not working

Albert R

Lurker
Hello
I have an unlocked Sprint Galaxy S5 (GM-G900P) and the mobile data is not working, even the sign of mobile data doesnt appear in the screen. I tried changing the APN and the SIM card, and reset the phone and doesnt work. Do you know if i change the ROM to a Custom ROM from Verizon could fix the problem?
I apreciate your help

Since that is the Sprint variant of the SGS5, I am going to assume your account is with Sprint. As a CDMA device, it must be activated on Sprint's network for data to work. The sim, as I understand it, is for LTE access only and I don't know if it will work if the 3G data is disabled.

I'd give Sprint a call and see if there is a problem with your account.

Thanks but i bought the phone in USA and I'm using the phone with a SIM from another country and i can make and recieve calls and SMS but when i try using the mobile data it doesn't work.

Just to make sure, you mean the SM-G900V (You typed "GM").

According to the spec's that model supports the following frequencies:

2G bands
CDMA 800 / 1900 - all versions
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - SM-G900V, SM-G900P

3G bands
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO - all versions
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 - SM-G900V, SM-G900P

4G bands
LTE 700 MHz Class 13 / 1700 / 2100 - SM-G900V
LTE 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - SM-G900R4
LTE 850 / 1900 / 2500 - SM-G900P

If the carrier for your sim card doesn't use any of those frequencies for data, that might be why it's not working.

Oh yeah sorry, the phone is the SM-G900P. Well, i'm using the phone with Telcel from Mexico and at least it support 2G and 3G bands

Was this phone originally bought through Sprint or was it a virtual reseller like Ting or Net10? I've heard of Sprint resellers locking the phone to a proxy that has to go through the Sprint Network.

Yeah i bought the phone on ebay. In that case what i can do to solve the problem? I have 3 phones with the same problem :(

We've had a few questions about this recently, about phones being locked to Sprint's proxy servers. Think the OP's difficulty might be with obtaining the Master Subsidy Lock(MSL) code, given that he's not in the US and very likely doesn't have a Sprint account. Could always contact Sprint though, however it could be the phone was associated with a delinquent account, they won't give the MSL code.

A custom ROM like CyanogenMod would more than likely fix things, because that's open and not subsidy locked.

So you've dealt with the Sprint proxy lock, and it's still not working. There's a distinct possibility that the phone could be blacklisted, given that it's a Sprint subsidized phone that came from Ebay. If the phone was associated with a delinquent, unpaid Sprint contract, where an ETF hasn't been paid, they'll blacklist it. Which effectively renders it useless as a phone. And presumably the phone IMEI and ESN blacklist is international to include Mexican carriers. Can you actually make phone calls and send texts with it?

I have the same problem with an S5 from sprint. I can make calls and send text messages in Telcel, but no getting Mobil data. I been cheeking in other pages and seems that there are many with the same problem.

From what I've seen IMEI/ESN blacklists tend to be internal. When I worked for Verizon we only had an internal list and didn't communicate at all with other carriers about it. I've also seen unlocked devices that were definitely attached to a delinquent account used no problem with another carrier. I don't think this would be the issue, especially when it's being used on a carrier in another country.

Did you remove or disable the Sprint proxy stuff? Because if you didn't, that's possibly why you got no data. Also make sure you've got the correct APN details for Telcel, because if it still has the APN for Sprint, it won't work. Can the phone browse the internet on WiFi?

This should be the APN for Telcel Mexico....

..I got no way of knowing if they're correct or not.

Yeah, the phone make calls and send text perfectly with Telcel and also with other company sim

Try double checking the APN details again. Make sure they are actually correct for Telcel Mexico.

Can the phone connect to the internet OK via WiFi, and browse websites? Because if that's not working, quite possibly it's still trying to communicate with Sprint's proxy.

Thanks for your help. I did both thing, the APN is correct and also I removed the proxy and no data.
And yes I am able to use WiFi with no problem at all.
Thanks again

  1. hi there, same issue as OP. i have a Galaxy S5 G900P which is from Sprint in the USA. I am using it in New Zealand. I have unlocked it which has has allowed me to use it for calling/txting by simply changing mobile networks to UMTS after the unlock was done. which is great but I can not use data as I can not change the APN. can someone help? ideally i would like to flash a G900F/I rom onto it but i understand this is impossible? the phone allows me to access the APN's and add and save them, but never to select it as an option. The phone is currently in repair with a Samsung authorized repair agent here in New Zealand but they themselves are having issues getting data working on it. I know in most cases I'd be advised to contact Spring in the USA for an MSL code but this device has a bad ESN in the USA. could anyone advise? surely there must be some way to get the G900F ROM working on it by flashing the ROM without the bootloader and modem. i am happy using the sprint modem as the g900p supports my carriers frequency for UMTS/HSPA.

I'm with USA Verizon and was having a lot of issues a while back trying to get a 4 year old phone registered and put back in service.

I ended up with Technical Support, two echelons above Customer Service, and they walked me thru some Hidden Menus and had me enter in all of that data manually.

I realize your phone is now with Repair Service, and you would think they would know all the tricks to get that done for you. Wishing you the best outcome on this issue.

I had the same problem, I bought a blocked S5 G-900P from Ebay, first I unblocked the phone and I was only able to make or receive calls, but the movil data didn't work, fortunately the seller sent me the MSL code and I was able to modify the proxy, but didn't work like it happened to Albert, even though I put the APN from my carrier (Claro Honduras). So I reset the phone on his original state, and the proxy was already modify, so I unblocked again, then I put the carrier APN and It worked! I think that the trick is in changing first the proxy using the MSL code to edit it and then Unblock the phone.
