Samsung Kies won't connect to S4

I've connected before with this phone, but now have a new computer and new download of Samsung Kies. I get the error message that no device is connected. I can't find any setting on the phone that would seem to affect connections via Kies.

Unfortunately, this is an all too common problem GalaxyS2Kent. At best, I would describe Kies as, "flakey", and I no longer use it myself.

There are a number of reasons that you may not be able to connect, as shown in these threads...

Thanks, but those threads didn't help. I think it's a Window 8.1 problem. I took my phone and cable (it came with the phone) to my laptop, which is Windows 7, and it works just fine. No Kies needed. Just plug it in, look at Windows Explorer, and it recognizes it immediately and shows all my files on the phone and on the SD card. Well, at least I can do that if I need to, but the laptop is in an outbuilding so is slightly less convenient than using my new PC. Sigh..........

I use the Samsung Kies drivers on my Windows 8.1 laptop, even though I do not have the Kies PC Suite installed, as I use them for Odin to flash firmwares, modems, etc; as well as moving files around in Windows Explorer.

If you would like the installation file for the drivers only, I will PM it to you. You will need to uninstall your Samsung Kies PC Suite and the drivers that came with it and then reboot your laptop before installing these.

Well, I've figured out the problem.... I think. On my new computer, I was using a USB 3.0 socket, but on my laptop it was a USB 2.0. The cable was the original one that came with my phone, and I assume it's probably for a USB 2.0. Anyway, I'm happy enough to just use my laptop for no more often than I need it.

Thanks for the replies. Oh, and I've uninstalled the Kies. Don't need it.
