SAMSUNG SAYS: Owners of Original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Note7 should power down. UNREAL!!

Don't tell me Samsung is going to wait until next August to release Note 8. NO WAY, and let everybody else gobble up market share. Watch February or March release and it better be amazing. There is no other phone I want. :(
That would be nice, but I don't think they can release the Note 8 around 6 months early.

They're probably still designing it, then you've got testing, government approval, and manufacturing it. They might be able to get it out a couple months earlier then planned, but Feb/March is way too soon.

Yeah, I dunno about a Spring release. The Chief was speculating on how they might be able to advance the schedule, but if I were them the last thing I'd do right now would be to rush a replacement out: they can survive one disaster like this, but a second one would be a different matter. And I'm sure that the schedule of releasing their 2 flagship lines 6 months apart rather than together has other advantages to them (e.g. there's always one or other that's relatively new and "state of the art"), so they may not want to mess with that too much.

When I upgraded to the Note 7, Verizon only wanted to give me 200 trade in for my Note 5, so I sold it outright for 350.00. So now I guess it looks like I will be buying another one. Not very happy right now.

So, do you think this malfunction was due to Samsung rushing it to market? To get a leg up on the Pixel? If so that's like comparing apples and oranges.

I just got my text from Verizon telling me to power down and get a new device. I'm so unhappy. I have no idea what phone to get. I upgraded from a note 3. I refuse to go to an iPhone. Any suggestions out there of what phone to get. Closest to the note7? I didn't like the s7

Most of the speculation about the Note 7 being rushed concerned the iPhone rather than the Pixel. Actually I don't think I've heard anyone suggest that competition with the Pixel was a motivation.

Was it rushed? Well it was released a bit earlier than the usual schedule, so perhaps. Was that a factor? Who knows - we don't know what the real cause of the problem is (and possibly never will). When I spoke of rushing I was simply saying that if I were them I would not try to rush a Note 8 to fill the gap, because they need to make sure they get the next couple of devices flawless, and that's not compatible with rushing.

What I'm hoping is that they devote more energy into the R&D of their foldable devices, which have been in development since 2009! First production models were supposed to be in 2015, then got pushed back for projected 2016 release, then 2017...and the last I read, they said it may not even be 2017. Since the Note line has been tainted, what better way for them to move on and have a replacement for the Note series, than creating a "new" line that's a foldable phone/tablet with S-pen?

I'd say the V20, but we're still a couple weeks until that phone is released. Maybe Verizon will be willing to give you a loaner/stop gap phone until that time?

No phone is closer to the N7. If you want Android, get a Pixel XL. Otherwise, get a i7Plus.

Sorry to say, but the S7 Edge is probably the closest thing.

I have a Note5, which was OK, but no SD card slot, and the phone doesn't feel as comfortable to hold as the Note7, so instead of going back to my Note5, I just ordered an S7 Edge. VZW is out of stock and will ship Friday, so I'll have it next Monday.

Pardon my ignorance, but how would a Pixel even make the list to be an alternative to someone who's used Galaxy Note series phones? There's absolutely nothing attractive about the Pixel line to me. Never saw the hype in any of the Nexus devices either. They may seem OK if you want a clean pure Android experience, but those used to Samsung OS, I think it would be a whole different... well... galaxy.

One phone that has been floating under the radar, but is one that I'm actually considering (especially for the price). The ZTE Axon 7. Snapdragon 820, 64gb internal w/ micro SD, Dual SIM (2nd slot is microSD slot). It's $399 via B&H. Only reason I'm not pulling the trigger is just to wait on the Huawei Mate 9 announcement.

That's what I've been looking at actually. One the other hand, I've started using the Oppo R7 Plus again, had it a year, but might actually keep it going for longer, still a good phone IMO, it's safe and it's reliable. N7 is going back at the weekend for a full refund. So I'm sticking with Chinese devices, and NO MORE SAMSUNG!

I wouldn't consider an iPhone 7 as an alternative choice to the late Note7, for one thing it's NOT Android.

Oppo R9S and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 should be announced soon too. Although, I believe neither company offers a microSD slot, which is typically a deal breaker for me. And I'm not sure that either have had T-Mobile LTE bands in their phones before.

Having a micro-SD is a must for me as well, I like my music and movies on the device. Which the Oppo R7 Plus does have. :) Of course I'm in China, so I do have a real wide choice of Chinese phones. Was actually looking again at Meizu yesterday, the local Meizu store owner wants me to teach his son English, so we're good friends, however Meizu devices with Flyme OS is heavily customized to operate too much like iOS for my liking. And I did spend a month at the Meizu HQ and factory in Zhuhai a few years ago, for staff English lessons.

2 things that are a prerequisite to a phone:

  • Removable Battery
  • SD card slot

if those are not in the phone, I will NOT buy it, ever.
the recent debacle with the Note 7 is a prime reason... if folks could just jerk the battery out, problem solved. no more fires.

They are going for about $300 right now, I just pick one up, so you may end up netting $50 in profit. Not sure if that makes it easier for you.

I sold mine to the carrier for $200 so I am at a $100 net loss :(

Regardless of the battery issue and being "responsible" and returning it, what kind of support will be around for devices that are not returned? Software updates? Parts availability? After having a note 2, 3, and 5, this phone performs flawlessly, battery is up to expectations and the S-pen and water resistance are big plus-es that I'd like to not lose.

Having bought the phone outright, I'm not worried about my upgrade or anything like that. But I don't want a phone that I won't be able to get a new screen for when I crack this one, especially seeing as how I've cracked two already.

As of now the only phone that even remotely interests me is the Pixel XL....but I want to actually hold it in hand.

No inside knowledge, just my personal guesses:

I cannot see any reason why Samsung would provide another software update for this phone. They want it off the streets and forgotten. The only circumstance in which I could imagine them issuing an update would be if people don't return them and fires continue to cause bad publicity for Samsung, in which case they may decide that bricking the remaining phones with an update, although that would obviously piss people off (and hence would be a last resort), is the lesser evil.

Parts? Dunno. There will be some in circulation, original and third party, but I doubt Samsung will produce more (for reasons given above), and it's only worth it for a third party to keep making them if enough people keep using them. So best guess is that supplies will be more limited, and original parts in particular.

It's unlikely there will be any official warranty support on a device that Samsung have recalled. Not from Samsung at any rate (what a carrier does is their own business).

As much as I hate it, that's the conclusion that I've come to, but was really really hoping to hear better news. Anybody else wake up hoping to hear "just kidding, it's all good".

I'm gonna hold onto this thing until I can actually hold a Pixel in hand. I've always wanted to do a nexus phone, but the phones have never had stellar specs on them, and I've been in love with the Note for well...ever it seems.

The water resistance will be the biggest thing that I miss making the switch. I wonder how long you have to return it for a refund?

In another thread in this forum people were saying that Verizon were telling them they could keep it, but the latest posts there suggest that that policy has changed (or been "clarified") and they are now being given a 45 day deadline to return it if they want a refund. I don't know how this varies with other carriers. But I guess Pixel devices will hit the stores in about a week, so you should still be able to have a look at one first.

I was thinking the 45 day time frame was for those who financed the phone.

Oh, wow. You've got way more options than even I have. Quite honestly, if I were over there, I'd get the Huawei Note 8 without a doubt. Unfortunately, unlike the Mate 8, they didn't add the US T-mobile LTE bands.

I'm actually looking forward to Huawei's next announcement, of the Mate 9, especially after seeing this:

http://venturebeat.com/2016/10/12/this-is-the-huawei-mate-9-in-standard-and-curved-screen-designs/

I remembered seeing rumors late last year that mentioned both Xiaomi and Huawei buying the flexible screen tech from Samsung, to use on future products, so looks like they are actually going to implement it.

Has anyone gone to 1 of the samsung phone stores inside Best Buy to see what they say of the future of the note series?

They won't know. The Samsung Experience employees are similar to any tier 1 sales reps at other stores. They are only given information once Samsung Executive management has decided to filter the information down to the ground floor. Corporation politics.
