my samsung j4 keeps popping on and off only when I plug it into a power source. “An error has occurred while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the Smartswitch PC Software” when I remove it from the power source, it stays off and wont turn on.

Sounds like the battery needs replacing.
 
i plugged it both to the pc and also the socket and it still did the same thing. the error is displayed on my phone but it keeps blinking in blue on and off. can I send you the pic of what I am talking about
 
I also believe so but was not sure and wanted to seek a second opinion before making any attempts to fix it
 
ok so it is hard to tell if it is a hardware or software issue. you can try and see if replacing the battery will help things.

but if it is not the battery, then it is a software issue, you can try and go to recovery mode:https://www.hardreset.info/devices/samsung/samsung-galaxy-j4-2018/recovery-mode/ and do a hard reset(factory reset).....or....you can see if your phone will boot up into download mode. here is how to get to download mode:https://www.hardreset.info/devices/samsung/samsung-galaxy-j4-2018/download-mode/

if so then you can try and flash a firmware update. go to https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ and download the correct firmware for your model of phone exactly. installing the wrong firmware can screw your phone up even more so make sure you have the right model number for the firmware.

well those are some of the options that i can think of.
