When I go to my contacts the message button next to the call is gone what could cause this on a samsung

I assume that you are referring to the call history log? Meaning, if you press the phone icon and select the tab at the top that looks like a clock. That lists all your incoming and outgoing calls... and next to each is a phone icon for calling that contact. There is no "message" button in the call log (at least not on Android 4 and up). However, if you click on the name/number part of the list it will bring up a call history for that contact and on that history page is a message button. Its an extra step but it accomplishes what you are looking for.
