Hi all! Somewhat same here. Symbian 3 does not seem much of an improvement so looking seriously at Android. Somewhat limited choice of handsets here in the mid-budget section: 1. Moto Quench XT3/5, 2. Dell XCD 35 (rebadged ZTE Blade), 3. HTC Wildfire. All seem to be running 2.1.

Inclined towards the Moto due to its 600 MHz CPU, battery life and better screen res.

With symbian I have been used to the following:

1. Easy to setup various profiles and timed profiles as well. There are also apps that link profiles to your calendar.
2. Free ovi maps offline turn by turn directions.
3. Decent 'today' agenda screen with upcoming calendar events (meeting, birthday, etc.)
4. Decent app for rejecting/blocking calls/messages (too much spam sms).
5. Full screen photo caller ID.
6. Use the gmail mobile app for e-mail when required. (avoid data charges).

I would presume all / most of this is possible on Android through widgets or natively, except for the maps. Is this correct?

Also I do hope it is possible to turn off completely any background data access/sync? I would like to do this manually using my home wi-fi as and when required, rather than run up any data charges (here our data charges are quite high).

I do understand that Google Maps 5 is being released to improve offline navigation, but still not in the league of ovi maps where I can download entire countries / states offline to my SD card and only use built in GPS. What are the alternatives to google maps? Paid or free?

I would highly appreciate any advice on apps / handsets to help the transition from symbian. If it helps, I am using the Nokia 5800 XM (which IMO is really quite a very nice phone). I am not worried about my contacts (they are already synced to Outlook and also I can export from my 5800XM to csv and re-import) or calendar (already using Google calendar through Google calendar sync). The only issue I do not want is all my e-mail contacts being imported into my android phone book.

TIA.

Welcome to the Android Forums!

I do believe there are third party navigation apps that allow the use of off-line maps...
