Help Sat Nav

Just used my Sat Nav for the first time long distance to take me to a place in Nottingham, fairly impressive but my old Nokia one had more info.

1. Voice comms, on Ace its synthetic, on Nokia it was 'real'

2. Speed - nothing to show my speed on Ace, very precise on Nokia

3. Speed Cam warnings were none existent, but live on Nokia

4. When I got home this morning, it told me my destination was on the left, I was on the right!! Nearly but not quite. Photo was house over the road!

Still, I was nearly impressed even if it tried to send me wrong way a couple of times. Finally, the phone dropped the GPS about a half dozen times. Killed prog, reloaded and it came straight back on, so its not the GPS.

Q: Do Google (who is impossible to contact) and Samsung read this forum?

Same again last night, keeps dropping GPS.Clsoe prog, open program, go to and its working again. Is there other sat nav software I can download for this phone?

It is the best GPS navigation
" And Does not need a data connection which is androids big let down "

But the samsung internet browser is better on Free wi-fi!!!!!

You really should give NavFree a try, its the nearest you can get to the nokia OVI sat nav . You can download maps and postcodes to phone ,so you dont need a data connection. And best off all, its free.

WiFi is only as good as its reception too. My job entails me traveling, sometimes across country, and wifi in a damn sight worse than data transfer. I can hop between towers (not always brilliant either) but with WiFi - no chance. I have completely disabled WiFi on my phone, not needed, as my internet data package is better. (Vodaphone).

NavFree UK does not seem to work on my Galaxy Ace, I had tried a few times - it will not install. I suspect software conflict.

BUT, I have been tweaking the factory settings on my built in sat nav and its running a hell of a lot better. I found out, by accident, that although I had disabled WiFi to get it to work, there is a WiFi switch in the satnav setting too that also needs switching off. I now have a VERY accurate sat nav that shows no appreciable delay from actual location to screen, and the verbal instructions are clear and precise even if a slip road is called a ram(p).

another satnav problem encountered is that I have to reboot phone if 'gps signal not found' because its the phone, not the signal.

I recommend an application called Waze for android. It has a realistic sounding voice and the navigation is good. Another thing about it is that you get live traffic reports from other drivers using waze. And if traffic starts to build on your route ahead, waze will automatically reroute to avoid the traffic and get you there quicker.

There is also an element of fun in the application because there are road goodies which you can drive over and collect which give you waze points. But if you're not that type of person, you can easily turn them off.

I really recommend this app. Give android one more chance.
There is a downside though you do need a data connection to receive live reports from other drivers.

Other things that can be reported are police traps, traffic, road hazards, animals, accidents, stopped cars, weather warnings, missing signs, speed cameras, fake speed cameras, and many more.

I was under the impression this was an American app? I do not recall anyone saying Waze worked elsewhere.

It was already on the phone when it arrived. Google I believe. I downloaded a voice syth which blended in with it to give me the verbals. It names streets and road numbers, like 'in half a mile turn left onto ******** Road, the B1240 etc. There is an upward pointing blue arrow, thats the link.It might be in settings, place finger on icon and hold, it will transfer to your home screen.

The tweeks I mentioned was in the settings, I just changed a few settings and it all works great now. ONE setting is a must - disable wifi in the satnav, it works better through the towers.
