My satnav finally died and I've decided to use my phone. Is it possible to use the navigation app offline or do I need to use my 3g.

My understanding is that you can have google maps cache specific parts of the map for offline use, but only to a certain size... might be something to look into

If you used to a satnav you might look at Navigon and CoPilot.
These paid apps can work offline completely.

I used a Navigon satnav (before it was a Garmin company) and now I'm using a Navigon app on my One X :)

I tried Navfree this mornign which was ok but the speaker on my phone is too quiet to hear the commands, when plugged into my cd player it doesnt stop the music like google Nav does.

There is a free one called OsmAnd & you can download the maps to the sd card for various countries, there is even a low level world map too.
I have also found it to be very accurate & it also has voice navigation too.

navigon, sygic or copilot. those are the frontrunners. the offline caching of maps from google maps won't give you turn by turn, unless you have a sim card in.

i just got that one and it looks promising. the one bummer is i can't find how to just manually add an address to navigate too, without having to go find the spot on the map.

you need to select the search option, if you are already on a map its the icon in the bottom left looks like 4 squares.
Then select the house icon & there are the sections to input 4 in total
Region.
City.
Street.
Building.
The only thing it could do with is a section for postcode.

Thansk guys, I have tried most of these, best seems to be sygic but you have to pay for that so gonna use Navfree for now.
