Came across this gps optimization app on appbrain. Claims positive results for Galaxy S phones. Apparently applies some fixes automatically. Just wanted to post here for people who might want to try it out.

What exactly does it do? When i install it, it just gives me the "Location & Security" menu.

it probably does what's been posted as the cold start workaround in the background. just guessing.
