hello, my apologies, i am sure these questions have been asked before, but i wasnt able to find the answers i was looking for.

1. boost mobile, lg marqee, 855?, 2.?, gingerbread, phone was rooted at store (against boost policy i presume), and setup as a wi-fi hotspot using an app called super user, . the tech said if i updated my phone, it would disable the wi-fi connection. also said if i updated first that the wi-fi app could not be installed, seems to me there would be a work around for this (i have no setup exp with rooted mobile devices). every time i log on, phone wants to update. have tried disabling automatic update checking, but still plagued with the notification.

2. as a separate more important matter, the national scene has me a little freaked out. is there any software access to 100% disable gps transmission/emergency location services?, if so, could this affect my wi-fi connection?, seems hard to believe there is no backdoor access to the gps function?

3. if it is not possible to access/edit the gps program/administrative properties,
then could i physically disconnect the gps module/antenna, without destroying my phone?, and if so would that affect its ability to be used as a wi-fi connection?.
i dont see any reason why it would affect my wi-fi, but i am not phone/droid savy, so thought i had better ask before i go dismantling /cutting wires on a brand new perfectly working phone. (well, except for the fact that it gives my location to all kinds of people/organizations i dont want it to) how can i physically recognize the gps antenna, without buying a $30 service manual.

4. my impression is that they can still probably get a less acurate fix using cell tower triangulation, my question is how long does this take, (i assume info is logged as soon as a connection takes place), and how accurate is this.

any enlightenment of the above issues, greatly appreciated. thanks, want2hide:confused:

So you are referring to doing more than going to Menu>settings>location and turning of all the gps functions?

If you turn off GPS, it is off. Simple as that. Nothing else is necessary or really possible to keep it off. However, it's possible (though highly unlikely) the phone could be hacked and GPS turned on remotely. If you're a Very Important Person such as a politician, spy, or maybe just crazy rich, you might be worried about that. Otherwise...meh...you're just paranoid.

If your phone is on, an approximate location can be determined by tower triangulation in a few seconds, even if you are not actively making a call and the screen is locked. You cannot be located if the phone is turned off, but then you can't make or receive calls or texts either.

This is part of living in the modern world. Your cellphone company knows where you are at all times. Do they care where you are? No.

They will share this information with authorities if proper papers are obtained.

Not to mention all calls, texts, ect have the ability to be monitored (they quite frequently are as well).

Cellular triangulation just takes a few seconds. Basically if they wanted to track you using that, they'll know in a couple of clicks the general area of where you are between three cell towers.
