Screen cuts off during calls

My wife's LG phone is giving her fits. When she is on a call, the screen (and keypad, obviously) goes blank. Sometimes it will flicker back on for a second or two, but then goes blank again. This means that if she needs to enter any numbers while on the call (like voicemail, for example), she is unable to do so. And to make matters even more irritating, sometimes after a call, we have to do a battery pull to restore the screen.

This might be a hardware problem but before we head down to the Verizon store, I wonder if there is any kind of software glitch that I could repair. I have checked her settings and don't see anything that would cause this behavior.

Can anyone help?

It seems to be a bad proximity sensor (the feature that allows the device screen to turn off when covered or while holiding the device close to the ear). If doing a "reset" doesn't fix the problem..then you should get the phone replaced.

The screen should turn off when she holds it to her head so she doesn't cheek dial. It also should turn back on when she pulls it away. I'm not sure exactly what your phone looks like, but if you have a screen protector, make sure it is not covering the proximity sensor (thats what turns the screen on and off). If there is nothing there, then perhaps the sensor is bad.
